    My first ONS map and CTF/BR map! [pics][both bata]

    Name: ONS-TAHighWay, CTF-Crossword, BR-Crossword.

    Version: TAHW: beta 02/01/07, crosswords: beta 06/01/07.

    Compatibility: UT2004, ECE for TAHW, latest patch (probably).

    Description:
    TAHW is an ons map on a small section of a huge highway on a concrete/metal planet.
    Crossword has both ctf and br versions, both in the same .zip, and has lots of narrow passages in the shape of a crossword puzzle (I can if I want to).

    Comments: I've made maps for a while, but these are the first I've put on the internet, so you are my first audience!

    Screenshots: First three are of Crossword*, last three are of TAHighWay.


    * crossword has changed (a lot) since these pics were taken. It's now much more decorated.

    Credits: Me. And err.. whoever made the humanoid stuff.

    Three days... no downloads... Is no one interested? They're not my first maps, you know...
    I've been making maps for years: These are just the first I'm putting on the internet!

    PLEASE someone download them and play them! If you don't want to, say why!

          Good to see someone likes it. do post your thoughts once you've tried them.
          Replaced screens with bigger ones.
          I hope it doesn't look to 'dime a dozen', but if they do, I've got another 10!

          P.S. there isn't any music, if you know any fitting music from another map, I'll put it in.

            Actually it has an industrial look that I like, and it reminded me of one of the star wars games from a few years ago. No offense, but it looked like it was lacking a ~something~ in the screenshots and I was going to download it to try to suggest what thats ~something~ might be. Im downloading now and will post a followup.

            I liked the bombing run better than the instigib for crossword. The instigib seemed like there was no room to move around. I think it might help if you add some color variety to the textures. Theres a lot of gray everywhere and it might benifit your map if there was a color theme like gray/bright yellow or gray/dark green. Also the Z-axis feature was difficult to get used to. You might want to add more of a overpass/underpass kind of network of halls to add to the confusion.

            I couldnt get TAHighWay to open in-game or using the editor. I get a fault.

              I tried your ONS-TAhighway.

              It works great on Instant Action with 8 bots and the layout is fine too.

                If you say you can't open it in-game, I'd say I'd done something beeping stupid like make changes without building, but if you can't get it in the editor either, I'd guess a faulty download. Try downloading it again.

                Yeah, I thought it lacked ~something~ too, but I couldn't think of anything to put in... The trouble with humanoid* maps is There's very little to put in the open spaces. I thought about putting some car wrecks in the highway itself (what do you think?), but I can't think of anything to put in the side alleys.

                I'll say again, CTF-Crossword is not instagib! There's just very few pickups and the map does play better with some link guns floating around. If you can think of where to put any more pickups, I'll put 'em in.

                And yes, crossword is a bit bleak, how about putting some yellow hoops in (like in over the centre node in TAHW)?

                You say There's too little z-action (at least, I think that's what your saying), this might be because of using the intsagib. I think that if I put in any tunnels or bridges, There's going to be to many different paths to run the flag on, making it imposable to stop the runner. I could make the maze bigger though, then add some other path.

                *You call them industrial, I call them after the texture and static mesh packs used in the map, i.e. Humanoid.

                  Dont feel restricted by the fact that your going for a Humanoid look. You can add a lot of detail to the walls to make every wall appear that someone (that someone being you) has taken the time to add a gas pipe that hisses quietly, or something else of your choosing. Overall, the more time you spend adding details to your map, the more that people will enjoy it. (1-hour maps are identifiable)

                  When I launched crossword without opening the ut first, it automatically started in instagib ctf, maybe I has my default as instagib or something. When jumping with low gravity I always got gibbed by an orbital satellite. I guess you added this so people would jump on top of the walls?

                  As for losing track of where the flag carrier is, that can be a problem at times, but when I play a map that has several paths between flags, and someone picks up my flag I usually just grab theirs and figure that I'm either going to meet them on the way back or we will both be defending our flags in our bases while everyone else fights it out. This kind of thing happens in Citadel, Chrome, and Orbital2. It can be annoying, but it puts some real pressure on your team/bots.

                  Ill try TAHW again this afternoon but I dont think it was my version because the zip file wasnt corrupt

                    I've tried adding various things to crossword. Is this enough?



                    There is also smoke coming from under the flags, and three points on the middle block, and sounds on most things.

                      Looking better! Im trying to think of a way you could add a little glass so that you can see past that arch in the middle. I dont know if that would clash though.

                        Hmm... the arch is meant to be there so you can't see from one side of the map to the other... Mainly so the defenders at each end can't shoot each other. But I think windows would look out of place, it seems the map is pulling my mouse towards some sort of disused automated gas refinery look, not much need for glass there.

                        Oh, it turned out that iCTF was the defaultgametype, I've fixed it to CTF. I wish it wouldn't do that.

                        Did you get TAHW working?

                        I'll try to get the new CW map on filefront tomorrow.

                          What if there was a grate or energy shield instead of a window? Would that be a possiblity?

                              Just a thought, ignore me if its stupid: do you have ECE? latest patch (3369)? TAHW will need ECE, and probably the latest patch.

                              Does UT give an error code or something? What does it say?
