Need help...New computer with Radeon9800 but UT2003 is slow.

    Hey.
We just got a new computer and here is the spec.

    p4 2.4 gig
    256 ram
    128meg Radeon9800
    80 gig HD
    Winxp

UT2003 runs at about 90fps which should be cool but it always keeps jumping and pausing for a second every so often and it's getting really anoying.
Loading times are still quite long aswell, do you think i need another 512 meg of ram or something to do with drivers.

    Thanx.

yeah when I got my radeon 9700 PRO, that happened the first time round.

    Basically update the drivers IMMEDIATELY.

    It worked for me.

EDIT: yeah that ram REALLY needs an upgrade

BTW I'm running my comp with 512MB and ut2k3 runs really nice

Get the latest Catalysts but that RAM is just an insult to your card.

Get at least another 512 RAM, then you'll be rockin mate.

Definantly get more ram, another 256mb would be enuff but id just grab a 512 stick, the reason its prolly jumping and skipping is cuz its loading the map off the page file cuz of the insufficient ram....

its your ram, big time. i have a p4, 512mb ram, and a radeon 9000pro 128mb and i play with video settings all maxed out plus hardware audio and my framerates are incredible. basically what i am saying is up your ram.

But it's cheaper to try and upgrade the drivers first...

                  /edit
Although I agree that 256 Meg RAM is a bit small.

1.remove 9800 and RMA (getting full refund)

2.buy a ti4400 and save $200 and see no difference in gameplay

                    3.enjoy

The R300+ series of Radeons offer better quality than the GF4's. Also it's a DX9 card, why would u wanto get a refund and buy a DX8 card? When Doom3 & HL2 finally arrive.. You'll be wishing you had a 9800+ too.

                        no difference in gameplay, possible.
able to play at higher resolutions, with AA/AF on, and still get the same/better FPS? nope.

keep the R9800 mate, much better card.

No, He'll wish he waited for ATI and nVidia to release their new hardware generations in febuary. I dont know about the ATI, but the nVidia will be optimized for DOOM specifically.

Maybe defragging the hard disk will help, I use diskeeper, but many suggest perfectdisk.

Agreed. I changed from a ti 4200 to a 9800pro and the performance increase didn't justify the price. It's nice for fsaa and ansitrophic filtering, but doesn't bring much more fps then a 4200. It still dropped to under 30 fps on max details at 1024x768 in most bigger maps. Got a 2600+ Barton and 2x256mb ram on an asus a7n8x rev2.0.
