        yep, i think "world/environmental art" is a growing, broad category for modeling, 2d art and traditional level design.

        and to follow dr sin's point... unless getting trained in technical stuff (i.e. animation or coding) i think what matters is just DOING stuff.

        you can be talented and skilled... but why would a company CARE if you havent shown any passion/commitment to the field?

        whoopie, you're trained and skilled... but never seemed to actually MAKE anything on your own... or done original work.

        compare/contrast to the "untrained" people who are cranking out really creative stuff and showing a growth rate of constant products over a long period time... and showing a passion for game development. that goes for both artists and technical coders...

        personally, i dont plan on a proper full-time career. i have one already. but this is a life passion now... and i'd prolly do part-time work if i run out of mod projects

        to do this as WORK would take a remarkable commitment (and a team that keeps it fun and exciting).

          i'v already been contracted by a semi large co-operation at the age o' 17... and yes i'm being paied

            Tho you can't deny that there are like 79897 web-designers out there.

              naw even more but few got the versitility and all aint certified in MX Studio (macromedia) and PS7/8 & Illustrator (Adobe)

                  Yeah, I shoulda put Designer & Level Designer instead of the Mo-cap. But I didn't think of it it then. Oh well....

                    But be prepared.. most people have a certain image of what game development is like and it's almost always wrong. You try beta testing a rock climbing game.. argh.. my eyes are bleeding again.

                    But the rewards are well worth it in the end in my opinion.

                      Do you write semantic markup, KriLL3? It’s one thing to “know” XHTML and CSS, and quite another to use it to effectively describe your web-documents. Someone who has talent with graphics such as yourself would do well to look into this. I recommend starting off by looking at the CSS Zen Garden (and read it, don’t skim it. )

                          Well, I'm currently trying to finish my college studies with specialization in computer graphics (the major subject) and software engineering hoping that maybe, just maybe one day I'll get a job as a programmer in the gaming industry.

                          Oh, and thanks for your opinion, DrSiN, it's much appreciated. However your post suggests that the "talent pool" is mainly composed of those using the technology the game provides, but where does a company like Epic look for those who will in fact participate in creating that technology ? No doubt such people would have to get their hands dirty with the current technology to have some understanding of its principles, but I doubt that this would be sufficient for someone trying to apply for a job as a technology programmer. What portfolio should such an applicant have to get a job as a tech programmer ?

                          I hope you check this thread again and (maybe) respond to my little post.
