It's a good time to be a consumer. Lots of choices out there... almost too many.

I love the stability of Intel/Intel (cpu/chipset) boxes, but my true reason for having a fast rig is to game and right now AMD is leading that race. My current aging Intel 845 based rig is maxed out at 3 Ghz and now I need to move forward. Problem is I just plunked down $400 a few months ago for a 6800 GT, and there's no way I'm gonna replace that with a PCIe card, which is the only option available for me in the Intel world. On the AMD side I can get a decent dual channel system based on the Nforce3 Ultra chipset that supports the latest processors but still supports AGP. That will give pci express a chance to mature for a year or so which is about what I expect this mobo to last.

And I will be overclocking mine, yes sir.

My New Rig, in about 2 weeks..

            AMD Athlon64 3200+ winchester
Asus A8v dlx(like folk I wil be using my 9800pro *AGP* from my current rig)
            1Gig Dual channel

Thats it, I will use all the other things from my current comp...I believe in going for stuff that are just a tad behind the cutting-edge technology, coz they cost you much much lesser and also last almost as long as the newest proc on the block.

My suggestion: If you have some money to spend on a comp today, and you are going out to buy a Gaming rig that will last you for another 2 years, Its best if you spend 50%-75% of the cash you have on a gaming rig today(I am sure you can buy a pretty decent one at that cost) save the rest and upgrade after one year again(Prolly with some savings over a period of one year). That way you will have a nice comp for the same cash over a period of 2 years. I hope you guys are getting my point, thats the reason why I am buying something like a 3200+ winnie, seriuosly guys, who gives a **** if word takes a second longer to load or windows takes 5 secs longer to boot...

as many before me have said - i'd prefer amd64 and an nvidia. just personal preference though.
i'm deciding what my next upgrade will be. amd64 put 754 or 939, agp or pci-e. which directions?

Yea, you can't join an Active Directory Domain with XP Home, or use Remote Desktop. As for gaming performance, or any application performance for that matter there is no difference. It always amuses me why some people insist that XP Pro will offer increased performance over XP Home without having the first idea what they're talking about. I get the feeling that the guy who posted the above quote is simply regurgitating any information he has heard from a 3rd party and passing it on as his opinion.

Also, to the original poster, I probably wouldn't of gone DDR2 until there is an advancement in the timings as the current performance can fall below that off standard DDR. That is probably the driving factor as to why Folk's PC will outperform yours, that's not to mention the considerable overclocking potential his of 3500 CPU.

I upgraded mine around 3 months ago:

                  AMD64bit - 3200+
                  radeon 9800 128mb
                  512mb pc3200 (crucial)
                  DVD-RW Sony Drive
Shuttle barebones system - with water cooling.

                  All for £640.

Does me fine, i can run any game i like with settings around high on everything and between 1028x768 n' 1600x1200.

I know, i had to stick to budget. It's hard when you have to pay rent, travelling expenses, living expenses and upgrade a PC system, every penny counts.

                        But you are right.

so why do you need more RAM, just curious. Im very much a 'get what you need' kind of guy. Which is why I am also puzzled as to why someone posted about needing a 512mb Radeon. Why does someone need one? Again just curious.

Ive always upgraded my PC every 2 years with a new m/b, cpu and gfx card but I just dont feel I need to. Games seem to run pretty darn well with my 2500+/9800. Still finding it hard to justify the cash, but starting to piece together bits anyway. It's not like I can resist for ever !

You bought a store bought PC?

                            HAHAHAHAHA

Congrats you've just spent 3 grand on over priced sub standard parts.

                            What a complete ***.

Building computers does not require much tech knowledge.

I built my first pc without any instructions when I was about 9.

Are you dumber than a 9 year old?

Jezza, he is talking about upgrading to more RAM, not a 512MB video card (which I believe only 1 exsist to the gaming community at a very high price). LoR only has 512mb worth of RAM which isn't bad at all, but an upgrade to about 1024MB would be best.

-LoR definally a nice computer if you are building on a budget! I would have ditched the expense of watercooling for air and with that extra money brought more RAM.
