[OT] HELP - having major comp issues

I know a lot of you guys are very well-versed in the art of computer hardware and tweaking. I'm really stuck with these two issues, which may or may not be related:

#1) Yesterday afternoon, my monitor began to flicker a bit. Then, it would shut off suddenly - NOT the monitor itself, but the video signal to it.

So, that leads me to think that the video card (Leadtek GeForce Ti4600) is on the blink - literally. I update the drivers, check connections, etc. and still the same. So I crack the case open, and neither fan on the GeForce is spinning, so I'm figuring that the card is overheating, etc. and blanking out. Time for a new 6800GT - yay.... and $400.... ugh...

My case has good ventilation and big powerful fans, so it stays relatively cool. Are the fans on the video card supposed to spin all of the time, or only when it gets really hot? (i'm guessing they're always on, but i'm no expert)

But that's not the worst of the issues.

#2) For 2 months, I've had a Microsoft Wireless Desktop Elite keyboard. Periodically, the mouse and keyboard would stop responding and I would need to reboot the machine. Note: The machine would not lock up - it would simply stop receiving input from the mouse / keyboard. Any processes would continue (like downloads, processor monitor, etc.) like normal.

Like I said, that would only happen occasionally - until yesterday. Now, every time I boot up the machine, I can use the mouse/keyboard for only a short period before they "die". The machine is useless now, because no matter what I do the mouse/keyboard will simply shutoff.

I've tried different mice and keyboards - same thing. I've tried both USB and PS/2 mice and keyboards (wired and unwired) - same thing. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the software - same thing. There's nothing really in the event log. It just simply stops responding to input.

Also, one of the things that's thrown me for a loop is there is no set pattern to when it dies. It's not like it always crashes when I open IE or do a certain action. It actually *seems* to be more tied into the number of movements you make. Also, if I have two mice plugged in, one will die but the other will keep going until, I guess, its number of movements is used up.

I've gone to Google and searched every combination of the problem. I've found a couple of promising things here and there, but they turned out to be useless. Overall, I'm really frustrated and have exhausted all options. I have to wonder if this is in any way related to the video card issue, but can't fathom how.

I'm really in a bind here. Aside from wanting to play ECE of course, I've got some major work deadlines over the next couple of days. I really, really need help.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Yes unless the computer is shut off.

Ok, cool (or hot as it may be) - so the video card IS bad. I was pretty certain already, but just wanted to double-check.

However, the main issue is *definitely* issue number 2. Any ideas on that one? And is there any way the video card could be related to that problem?

its HIGHLY unlikely ur vidcard has something to do with #2

the only thing i can think of is that ur mobo is b0ned in the mouse/keyboard area :bulb:

#1 Probably a bad vid card or bad connection on the VGA plug.(Had one that would do that if I wiggled the connector)

#2 As a last resort you might try going into the bios and setting it to load setup defaults, save and reboot. Thats helped me in the past

I was thinking of the motherboard as well - however, like I said, I've tried the mice/keyboards not only on PS/2, but on USB well - both directly and through a hub. They also function perfectly up until the point where they cut out.

That leads me to think that it's a software thing, but obviously I could be wrong. I'm really hoping that it's not the Mobo....

have you tried replacing the batteries on your wireless keyboard and mouse?

That's not the issue- I've also tried wired mice and keyboards and the same result occurs. I mentioned it in the original post.
