i group UT and UT2k3 with Quake3, as they are all similar generation of online gameplay... oriented around running, with major splash damage weapons... and very high frag-per-minute counts.
in other words, you die a lot in them, with high respawn rates. they are also more "56k friendly" by having large projectiles with splash dominate gameplay.
unreal... well, is a different story. i'd just say that the series has expanded quite well and shall continue to expand from the looks of it.
what's so exciting, to me, about UT2k4 and Unreal2 XMP is that they shall very STRONLY take the series into new and potent territory.... breaking away from merely the old school gameplay (although ut2k* has it bundled inside).
only a small, vocal group of complainers really focus on the negatives.
the unreal engine is THE standard. the series is historic and still alive.
For a start you are missing Unreal from that list. Go and buy it straight away!
I think the biggest difference betweeen Unreal series games and other fps games is the speed. U games are very fast and have dodging, whereas other fps games do not.
I would also recommend going and getting half-life, since it is probably the best single-player fps ever.

I disagree, ID makes the new standards, not Epic. ID engines are the engines that set the standards for years to come. Even now the Quake 2 and 3 engines are still used in new commercial projects.

That's history.
30+ (known) UnrealEngine2 commercial products right now. Show me how many commercial games were done with Q3A engine... then show me how many are lined up for Doom3. Certainly, Quake2 set standards and has been the standard for years (moreso than Q3A, one could argue, given the role of HL). I'm just saying that things change...
Dont get me wrong, i respect ID... and think doom3 will set technology standards. But that's different from BEING the norm, and beign the standard for development purposes.
Right now, UE2 is that standard... and ID (and others) have to catch up or seek to catch the market down the road for the next wave.
If you map, model, or program... and want into the industry... seems to me that you can quickly realize that unreal is where it is at (in spite of HL2 hype).
$1,00,000 Contest.
Movie making tools which no other game engine right now provides... (and you get to download it for free)
Unparalleled support (3dbuzz.com VTMs alone squashe the years of Q3a tutorials)

Glad to hear that. UT came installed on my PC and I've never looked at others. (Yeah it was cracked, not my fault though, I got my comp second hand)

And Doom, since it started the whole thing off.
Unreal came cracked on my PC too. I had a few games and it stopped working. I'll go and buy it and HL. Not sure about Doom. I was playing Alien Breed in those days :haha:

There have been alot of Q3A engine games, some of them have been pretty popular. American McGee's Alice, Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force, Star Trek Elite Force II, Soldier of Fortune II, Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault Spearhead, Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault, Call of Duty, Heavy Metal FAKK 2. And those are just off the top of my head, I'm sure I've missed alot.

I remember Alien Breed
You can probably still get the shareware version of Doom, so you can try it without paying. It looks very dated now but is still fun. Look for one of the various enhanced Doom engines (ZDoom, JDoom etc) which improve the visuals a lot and add proper mouse-look.

When editing tools are concerned Epic rules the scene, but Epic has yet to make an engine that truly sets technological standards.
Their engines are great but not groundbreacking. We have yet to see the DOOM 3 engine, but if rumours are correct it too will set the new standard for FPS to come. John Carmack is, and always will be, the best programmer in the gaming industry. I would not be surprised if Tim Sweeney had a Carmack poster above his bed.
As for Q3 engine games, those where listed already and the fact that developers still use it speaks for itself. IMO ID is the company that made the gaming industry into what is is today. The only thing that sucks about ID is that they only use OpenGL and neglect Direct3D completely.
I also must say that i like Unreal engine games better because it is more tweakable. When you look in the folder of an unreal engine game it makes sence to most people. You can read what is in most files and you adjust them according to personal preference.

Sounds like a plan  Thanks for the Doom info. I want to try some others before the all consuming 2k4 hits the shelves.
:haha: AB3d. Not a bad game in its day. I booted it not long ago and it looks ****e ROFL. I still love my Amiga, though better to emulate it now.

You can also do what i did. I went to a 2nd hand website and bought the following games:
Daikatana
Unreal 1
Unreal 1: Return to na pali
Unreal Tournament G.O.T.Y
Quake 2
Quake 2: The reckoning
Wheel of Time
Clive Barkers Undying
Now if that isnt a nice list of First person classics i don't know what it
