Currently doing mod work myself, and we've had several people on the team run into the same problem. Deleting the mod's .ini files seems to do the trick for us.

Do you get this error when entering the game or when you try and play online with the mod?

I get the error anytime I try to start Alien Swarm. Wether I'm just double clicking the Alien Swarm EXE or all ready have regular UT2K4 up and running and go underneath the Community - Mods stuff. Tthe game will not start.

          tried deleting the INI's

Deleting the Alien Swarm and UT2K4 INI's didn't fix the problem. Still getting the "Invalid CD Key error".

I get it when I try to start certain mods, including DrSiN's Test Mod. Other mods work fine.

Note - Deleting the .ini's for the games does seem to fix the problem for me.

When I start the game. I've noticed that if I delete my UT2004.ini and allow UT2004 to recreate it, it doesn't totally recreate it, and isntead also gives me this error. Thus, if I ever for some reason lose my UT2004.ini, I'll need to reinstall to play again, or atleast get a copy of someone else's UT2004.ini. My guess it that some specific value must be missing from the .ini files. :bulb:

I tried deleting my unreal.ini and let UT2K4 recreate it. I started regular Unreal, and it popped up with the "invalid CD Key' error. I copied my orginal unreal.ini back and tried again. UT2K4 worked as usual. Strange that I was getting the error after deleting my unreal.ini. Makes me think that something is wrong with the Alien Swarm INI file.

                    Getting some help.

Joe Wilcox, from Epic, and I have been emailing each other back and forth the past couple of days. Hopefully he will be able to find a solution to this problem. I'll post back when I know more. I'm really appreciative of Epic for looking into this problem.
                    Thanx!!!

Try removing these from (insert mod here)user.ini:

NumPad6=set playercontroller bZeroRoll True | set playercontroller rotation (pitch=0,yaw=0,roll=0)
NumPad4=set playercontroller bZeroRoll False | set playercontroller rotation (pitch=16384,yaw=0,roll=16384)
NumPad3=set playercontroller bZeroRoll False | set playercontroller rotation (pitch=0,yaw=-16384,roll=0)
NumPad2=set playercontroller bZeroRoll False | set playercontroller rotation (pitch=0,yaw=16384,roll=32768)
NumPad1=set playercontroller bZeroRoll False | set playercontroller rotation (pitch=0,yaw=32768,roll=-16384)
NumPad0=set playercontroller bZeroRoll False | set playercontroller rotation (pitch=0,yaw=0,roll=16384)

I have never seen it give me the invalid cd-key error since removing these.

I've searched and can't find that stuff anywhere at all in my UT2K4 files.]

                          FIXED!!!!

                          I fixed the problem!!!
I redownloaded the Alien Swarm ZIP file and then deleted everyting Alien Swarm related.
I extracted the ZIP file to a folder on my Desktop. That's when I noticed that some files from the first Alien Swarm ZIP had not extracted. So I manually copied and pasted everything from the unzipped files into the proper UT2K4 folders. I then went and deleted the defUser.ini from the UT2004\System folder and started Alien Swarm. Works like a charm!!!

When you Unzip the MOD there are 3 folders: AlienSwarm, Music, and System.
I placed the AlienSwarm folder under my UT2004 folder. I manually copied the contents of the Music folder to my UT2004\Music folder. I manually copied the contents of the System folder to my UT2004\System folder. Make sure you copy the AlienSwarm folder (contents and all) and place under your UT2004 folder. The other folders can have their contents manually copied and placed in the corresponding UT2004 folders. Don't forgot to delete the defUser.ini file before starting Alien Swarm.

Hope this helps other people. The key for me was doing the manual extractions.
