    This list is almost perfect...

If you throw away Genesis (Specifically Phil Collins), and replace with U2.. There now its perfect with the exception of The Neptunes, House, Trance, and some Acid jazz...

5 pages and no mention of Clutch.

        I'm ashamed of you all.

Go here and atone for your sins.

Agree that they are (*cough* were cough*) good. I think Echoes is the best song EVER made, by ANY artists/bands/singer. Noone tops that masterpiece ever. Esp. the lyrics of it.
(synchronize it with 2001 Space Odyssey's last chapter! It's fun!)

I'm not a fan of most *-metal/rock (nu/black/heavy/etc...). Definitely more into the electro/industrial/experimental stuff. Needless to say, I think the UT2K4 music is actually pretty **** good for a video game.

                  Some of my favs:

                  Skinny Puppy
                  Einsturzende Neubauten
                  Coil
                  Beefcake
                  Noisex
                  P·A·L
                  The Legendary Pink Dots
                  Converter / Pain Station

...and many, many others. Coil probably tops that list, as they are the one band I hope to see live before I die.

I also love older goth/punk, along the lines of Joy Division, Bauhaus, Exploited, Siouxsie. Some more contemporary rock I like: Clutch, which was mentioned a few posts ago, and of course the Pixies.

                      KENNY G!!!!

Just kidding, but it's defintley gotta be De La Soul (an old school rap group), with Gorillaz close on their tails.

To prove that De La Soul kicks copious amounts of ***, i'll post the lyrics to their song "Held Down" Ft. Cee Low, off of their latest album (Aoi: Bionix, for the unititiated). Also to prove that rap also kicks ***.

Artist: De La Soul f/ Cee-Lo

This is dedicated to all my folks
Diagnosed with a bad case of that proper upbringin
And never took the time to fall in line or follow
                      or swallow the thoughts
Of the recognized committees who lurk throughout ya cities
Ya hood, ya town, no matter which type
You from the same type of people try to hold you down
Just because you tailor made for bigger and better things
Never missed a chance to move ahead of things
And what does it bring? I tell you for me
it brought jealousy in back wounds from all the stabbin
Cats posin as my fan just to get grabbin what's mine
I'm livin in times where my daughters are found around
kids who can't afford thinkin caps
But always found drinkin raps and eatin off beats
Claimin laws of the streets - but who made the laws?
Everybody playin +Rebel+ with no sign of a +Cause+

                      [Chorus: Cee-Lo]
Well I, feel the world around me
I've found, that others, will bring you down, just to be down
You've got to make up your mind, where you wanna be
Where you wanna go with your life

Yo, I'm never singin the blues but findin the clues to maintain
And I been blessed to reign supreme over nearly every dream
I had, and I made it come true
I'm an imperfect man and I'm holdin the clue
to perfection, it doesn't seem to matter what direction I look
                      I find people settin traps
Tryin to find the goal - without havin any maps
Even friends of mine, jumped on line, just to become my adversary
They felt they were entitled to the dairy I made
They don't come to chill or behave
And they got, toast ready to burn
Not learnin to live, but they yearnin to take what you earn

                      [Chorus: Cee-Lo]
Well I, feel the world around me
I've found, that others, will bring you down, just to be down
You see - you've got to make up your mind, where you wanna be
And where you wanna go with your life

So quick to place blame.. and deny the shame we bring upon ourselves
So many names held accountable for my own account
When a large amount was weight - that I made and shaped
                      When I climbed I found
It was hard to find others around to point my fingers at
Which made me realize the truth
The biggest supressor could be your own ego lookin for an excuse
to plant roots, in a field of self-sorrow
to sprout and follow the first thing you feel
Nourishes your hunger to be respected, it gets hectic
And when I'm watchin the news, and my daughter walks in
and choose to ask, "Why were all those people on the floor
sleepin, covered in red?" I told her
that they were lookin for God, but found religion instead

                      [Chorus: Cee-Lo]
Well I, feel the world around me
I've found, that others, will bring you down; just to be down
You see, you've got to make up yo' mind, where you wanna be

                      {*Cee-Lo harmonizes and ad libs with choir*}

                      [Cee-Lo]
I need my SPAAAACE, to live..

Well I, feel the world around me

Ok, without going through every post, here's my list. I'm very opinionated about music, so this might **** off a few people.

Pink Floyd - Probably the best ever. Why? Because they understood how to make interesting and creative music. Yes their lyrics were usually good as well, but they put together some of the best pieces of rock MUSIC ever made. Echoes, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, One of These Days, and many many more.

Led Zeppelin - I can't think of any other band that best signifies what hard rock was about. Too often only remembered for Stairway to Heaven, which isn't even close to being their best song.

Black Sabbath - Great early metal band. Often thought of as just a (evil) gimmick band. But their first few albums just flatout rocked.

Sound Garden - In the 90's when 90% of all rock bands were trying to sound like Pearl Jam, Sound Garden stood out as "different". That's just my opinion though.

                              Bands that I despise....

Anything that has to do with rap, including rap/rock. It actually makes me angry to hear it.

Metallica - The most over-rated band of all time. They had some good music in a few of their songs, but for the most part it was all repititious nonsense. Lars is an idiot as well.

U2 - PLEASE!!! Someone shoot Bono. Did they ever do a song that didn't sound exactly like all of their other songs, just different lyrics?

I agree with everything you wrote, but I especially agree with that particular opinion. Metallica has made a few good tracks, but they're nowhere near the godlike status some people think they deserve.

And don't get me started on Lars. That man is idiocy itself. And it doesn't help that people think he's "the greatest drummer in the world". He's not.

I can mention a lot of drummers that are better than Lars. Keith Moon and Mike Portnoy are just two great drummers I could think of right now that are infinitely better than Lars. Hell, even my dad (who played drums in a rock/beat band in the 70es, and still plays from time to time) is a better drummer than Lars!

IMO the only way to listen to Metallica songs is to listen to Apocalyptica. Among other music, they play some of the old Metallica songs. On cellos.

Another great Metallica-inspired band is Beatallica. They play a strange mixture of Metallica and Beatles, such as "And justice for all my loving" and "Blackened The USSR". Great fun-type band. Their music is available for free at http://www.beatallica.org

It's kinda funny that some of the bands inspired by Metallica are so much better than "the real thing"
