Was UT2003 even intended to be released?

I keep noticing all kinds of things that make me think UT2003 was a "hold-me-over" till UT2004. For example, the website. Through the life of UT2003 the site was never updated and was quite shallow. Once UT2004 was ready to come out, the site got an entire badass revamp and is consistantly updated.
Another example would be the UT2003 manual and packaging. Remember the crappy cd sleeves? mono color manual? The game was buggy as hell, typo's in the menu. An obvious rush job. What was the point? The cheap packaging and menu alone almost seemed to prove that they didnt think the game would be very profitable. (hence, why spend the money on the pretty packaging?)
UT2004, I believe, is what was intended to be released in the first place. Trust me, Im not complaining one bit. Just an observation and not a gripe to anyone involved in making the game. In any type of creation, there are always "hold-me-overs". Take God for instance. Think of how many butts he had to make to get to this degree of perfection.

Point proven. have a great day.

Hmmm, have both packs lying in front of me. The UT2k3 manual cover looks fine to me.
The packaging looks like a twin sister.
The only point I agree (concerning packaging an' stuff) is the monocolor printing of the manual.

Edit: Oh, well. Have the german version of both games. Maybee different packaging in different countries.
    Can someone comment on this?

      Nice pic.

If I would have seen the picture first I don't think I would have even read your post, but I did and I can see where you're coming from. I ,for one, enjoyed 2003, but the demo for 2004 all but wiped that game away from my memory. Epic just got it right. I've said it before and I will say it again, I will continue to buy games in the UT seriers because Epic listens to fans.

Maybe it was a rushed out game. But I played UT2k3 14 months 2 hours a day on the average. It was my first on-line shooter and most time I loved it, and some time I hated it because of the many many shortcomings. Please do not forget, no UT2k4 without UT2k3. 80% of the games is the same.

I think one of the reasons for releasing a full UT2004 and not just another bonus pack, was the huge amount of negative feedback 2003 got. It has its fans but, wow, there were a LOT of unhappy fans. And just about everything got its fair share of flak (map design, special moves, adrenalin, weapons, ...)

          Pure speculation though

Indeed a nice post! You make an Interesting point. I didn't like UT2K3 nearly as much as I like UT2K4. Much more polished improved gametypes/new ones. Even sweeter graphics. The majority of the maps don't suck now but the ones that do tend to be the old ones. There is also a whole host of cool mutators and stuff like that. UT2K4 makes UT2K3 feel like your playing pong! Great post and indeed that chick has a sweet ***. I bet she has a gorgous face and some nice tahtahs to! Well atleast I am hoping.

P.S: Arg oh poor girl! It looks like she has a small bruise on her butt. Poor girl.

I had a good solid Year playing UT2003 in a competetive capacity aswell as for fun. For £25 I had my monies worth, considering Max Payne 2, to name one, cost me the same and took 10hrs to complete; and was then relegated to my old games shelf.

So in answer to your question - NO. UT2003 gave me and many many people many hours of great fun.

Im still playing it for IG now

Just check some of the amazing frag movies available for UT2k3

PS. Nice ***, Ive had better though.

                  UnrealTournament.com consistently updated? :haha:
The site even reads that the game was released "All over the world" on the 16th, while we know it wasn't released until the 19th in Europe, and the SE wasn't available in the Benelux until today.
Anyway, the box I got UT2k3 in is EXACTLY the same box as the normal DVD version of UT2k4 comes in (if the screenshots are accurate)
It even has about the same front.
I do think UT2k3 was rushed (buggy first version released 2 weeks after the demo), but I really doubt it was meant as a hold-me-over.

And yes, that's a pretty perfect butt. The girl looks a bit too beach-y to my tastes tho'

(edit) And like Porny said, it was well fun while it lasted.

Wow, talk about a perfect ***. Seriously, not too fat, not too skinny, its just right. Like poriddge, except with an overdose of male testosterone. Notice everyone on the beach watching her. And clapping. I'll worship the ground you walk on if you can get a looping 360 degree spin around view of that chick (matrix style, yeah) with pause and stuff. Hey, I can dream.

Ok, I don't remember the stuff in the menus, but I know with kick *** graphics (and weapons and stuff) like that, its hard to call it a rush job. Maybe some late night coding, yeah, but not a rush job.

I think it is a shadow because of the nice curved dimple she has.
