The 64-bit version has two renderers to choose from, and they are newer than the one in the 32-bit version. However, those renderers are also more limited (doesn't display textures where there is a long chain of combiners, for instance). Personally I use it for testing mod compatibility – the OpenGL renderer is the only one that's available on Linux, and it works pretty much the same way there. Actually, on Linux UT2004 is 64-bit by default (I doubt there is anyone still using the 32-bit client there).
Also, the 64-bit version is actually a good thing for being future-proof. In the future, Microsoft might drop 32-bit support. Then such legacy applications will only run through virtualised environments; but UT2004 will continue working natively. And lastly, if all your other applications are 64-bit, then using the 64-bit version should avoid having to run the whole WOW64 emulation system.

I get a higher frame-rate with the 64-bit version, however I am missing variable hit-sounds in UTComp (it may be an independent problem with my Creative soundcard); not really a big enough issue to go back to 32-bit.

I see. Thanks for the response. Perhaps I'll just have to not get the patch XD

There are no real improvements. UT2004 maps can't become large enough to benefit from the increased address space, but the game requires more memory anyway due to doubled pointer size. UnrealScript still is 32 bit though and pointers need to be translated, which eats up any performance advantage the 64bit version may give. Also there are issues with the D3D9 renderer and ambient sounds e.g. of vehicles.

Bottom line: The 64bit patch isn't worth the trouble. Its only advantage is that it uses separate executables and system/user ini files, so you can try it in parallel to the 32 bit version.

    64-bit UT2k4 on Windows 7

    Greetings,

I have the GOG version of UT2k4 and I was wondering if it's possible to make it 64-bit so I could benefit from some improvements. I am using 64-bit Windows 7.

May I know if this is the right patch http://planetunreal.gamespy.com/View...s.Detail&id=75 ?

I'd also like to know the known issues of a 64-bit UT2k4. Depending on what's mentioned, I might change my mind.
