I really like those 1on1 maps... and DM-desertisle (or something like that) dam that map kicks ***.. for my singleplayer head-to-head I had to play a instagib against another team on it..
As I am buying the game solely for DM/TDM (and maybe DDOM), those "DM maps suck" rants scare the **** out of me. Well, they HAVE to be tons better than the atrociously bad DM maps in ut2k3, heh.
Originally posted by KittyFantastico I think all of the new DM maps, except for DesertIsle, range from good to great. Epic stuck to their new design philosophy: old style flow w/out a lot of fog and static meshes.
1v1-crash - somebody started throwing meshes in and didn't stop in time.
1v1-mixer - nice "at least 4 players" map
1v1-irondust - how you can screw a bsp tree with very well placed "seethrough" floors (but it's fun when you hear someone with 3200 proc and 9800XT complaining about fps )

General impression: GRAPHICS >> GAMEPLAY
The first two are from UT2003. I thought we're discussing the NEW UT2004 maps here.
Was this map made by Hourences? I'm too lazy to tear it open in the editor and look, but it feels A LOT like DM-Sae...almost like a rip replacing the ferns with Tarydium crystals...
Also, the lighting is pretty substandard in there, but I think that can't be helped because the level is mostly static mesh.
Regarding the new DM-maps I personally think that they are of a higher standard than in UT2003, generally... Some of the 1on1 maps are great, hopefully no more compressed now
TDM 4on4 are a different story, Deck17 wil work, Rankin, perhaps Rraigar and that map they played in the IGN vs Atari competition... Goliath looked good but might be to big...
I stand on about the opposite side as the topic creator. The DM maps are about the best new maps in this thing. The BR maps from 2003 are mostly good (not a fan of anubis or twin tombs), and they added very few, of which Colossus stinks. The CTF maps are kind of generic (identical bases with a bridge/field in the middle) besides Moon Dragon. The DOM maps IMO aren't good, nor where the 2003 ones, and I still play only the CBP ones. The forest one isn't bad. But the DM maps are nice, with all the vitality shown in a lot of arenas with the plants and whatnot. Besides, the new skyboxes are top notch.

it's obvious that you are basing this decision on the look of the maps and not how they play. the plants and whatnot? and the skyboxes? please those are not features that make a good map, that's just extras. what makes a map good is the layout, flow, and item placement, and if there are ways to move through the map in a sophisticated manner via boost jumps or something then thats what separates a good map from a great one.
personally I though all of the new DM maps were really goood, except for a few, cant remember them off the top of my head. Corrugation kicks *** tho, same with Gestalt
I was pretty damned impressed with all the new maps, especially DM-1on1-Squader. Just my type of map. Tight as an Olsen Twin but just flows like warm honey.
Curse 3 ain't exactly an improvement over the original and CTF 1on1-Joust is a bad newbie mapper's 1st attempt gimmick map but they can't all be perfect.
(In case anyone wants to jump on me for mentioning maps that were in 2k3 I never bought 2k3 so I dont know if they were or not)
