No sound in AVI of demo

I recorded a demo and exported it to an AVI in the game last night. The AVI has no sound at all (speakers are on and not muted). Doesn't the game record sound as well as video?

The built-in video dumping feature is quite useless. If you want audio as well, you'll have to use something like Fraps or another video capturing tool.

How does the built-in tool work, anyway...

You have to type demorec and a name for your demo in the command console, then stopdemo when you finish. Then you go back to the main menu, click Community>User Demos>your demo and the create AVI option in the lower right corner.

I would use Fraps, but you have to pay to record more than 30 seconds of video.

I know how it's used, but I don't know how it works. Does it play the demo, then take a screenshot on every frame or something?

Does Fraps have the ability to record the game's sound if the computer's soundcard lacks the Stereo Mix and WhatUHear features, as many of the newer ones seem to?

Yes, it by default records Windows output (exactly what comes out of the speakers) without relying on virtual loopback devices. Fraps is also not the only accelerated recording software, you can use PlayClaw for it, and it has a lot more sophisticated control over audio sources.

To update: I spent the $37 on Fraps and find it most delightful to use. It captures high quality video and sound. My only complaint is that it's hard to tell when it's recording and when it isn't. Sometimes I hit the key I assigned as the record key and the numbers show up, indicating that it's recording; other times nothing happens. At any rate, I've finally been able to produce some videos I'm proud of.

I like PlayClaw better, as it's actually multithreaded and has more than zero configuration. But Fraps is decent as well.

I use xfire to record video. It's completely free, but limited to games that xfire supports.

Also this DM-Seasons is much nicer that the one in the video.

I found the XFire codec to be too lossy. Unless they added more configuration options lately.

Hey jefe, great video. I love the church, the trees and the little graveyard, especially that open grave with the creepy voice emanating from the coffin. Demo recorded and will be uploaded tomorrow.
