    Key stealer?

I frequent (read: lurk) in one of cheat web sites. Many of you know this site, where Zellius and the rest of the hated hang out.

No, I don't cheat...I am an admin for several sites and like to know what is out there. So if someone says "so and so has an aimbot", I will at least have an idea if one is out or not.

Anyway, in a post from a few days ago...I saw this:

"Be sure to foward where the cdkeys are kept, I'd like to throw together a cdkey stealer for it a.s.a.p., this time creating an online database of them, where trusted people can have a look at them =)"

Please, someone at Epic tell me this isn't possible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just see someone stealing my key, and then having 50 people using, so I have to go buy the game again. And no, if it is possible, I don't see that scenario as far-fetched at all.

Someone tell me that person is full of ****, please...

Thats has always been a possibillity, you just have to be really careful with what you install.

Its possible. The developer should encrypt the key once its entered into the game.

its very easy to still your cd with a webscript, the cheaters are using php much better yet, your key is in the registry in playing form, its not cleaver, it should be encryted and saved to the games directory with machine details.
Epic just lazy and dont care , they can make more money from people that actually bother to buy the game, if your loose the key buy new game.

webmasters can read your local files from internet explorer, change to mozilla or firebird and you'll be safe.

check a demo of the script that reads your emails from outlook express its a security site dont worry.
this script shows you how you can be hacked

          Unfortunately enough, it is possible.

How good are you at tweaking and editing the Windows registry (if you use Windows, that is) ? If you have some knowledge, you might want to try a method described here.

It works (as you can see from my posts there), though installing additional stuff and also using the UED requires some setting up before everything works ok.

That wouldn't help anything. They can steal encrypted key as well as unencrypted without problem.

Not true. Atari/Epic can issue a new key if certain conditions on your part are met.

Wasnt there talk a while back about the risk of having ur cdkey nabbed being reduced if the cd-key wasnt in ur registry....?

[ELF] have always said that their publicly released aim bots steal the CD Key of the people that use them.

No big surprise that people are stealing keys.

Just be careful what software you install.

It's got to be stored or entered at some point - therefore there will always be the chance of it being stolen.

                    How depressing...

Well, at least you will now be able to ban people by cdkey. I suppose that if a stolen keys make in into the wild anyway, they can't be used by more then one person at a time right?

                      Hi everyone

A few peeps might know my CD-Key Securer I did for 2k3.

For those who don't mind to enter a password (or enter a disk holding a "passkey") I've already done CD-Key Securer 2.

A bit more info can be found here.

I'll release it to the public as soon as I tested it with 2k4.

What it basically does it to encrypt your CD-Key with your PW and only decrypting it ti launch UT - encrypting it right away again.

Yes, it's no 100% security, but more than comes out of the box.

internet explorer already did it or will do it for you, thats the big problem, all the microsoft scriting shells objects and activex controls are bad for your system, you dont need most of those features.

wixp sp2 will close these holes but till than jus pray or change browser.

Yes, it sucks... and makes me want to find out where they live so I can drive a Mack truck through their house... fortunately, we have people like Hellcat who actually give a **** about CD key security.
