FYI on ATI vs Nvidia

Just in case you are thinking about upgrading your video I thougth I'd give an FYI.

Now my results differ from Tom's hardware (who lead me down the primrose path). I am not giving a review just stats. You can draw your own conslsion.

For your consideration:

System A:
Athlon XP 1700
RAM 768 MB
G4 Ti4200 128 (52. detenator drivers)

System B
Athlon XP 2400
RAM 1000 MB
ATI 9600XT 128MB 4.2 Catalyst Drivers)

I tested these boxes and gave them the same game graphic and video card settings in several modes and Guess What? They the ATI card (with a faster processor and more RAM mind you) only gets an average of 5 more frames per second than the Nvidia card.

Now the ATi is supposed to be equal to the FX5700 according to most reviews, and the 5700 should beat out the Ti4200... makes you wonder.

weird... maybe you have some settings on the computer that affect the FPS

RAM and proccessor do make a difference.
Your second rig will see better performance for either card.

It's the other way around if you introduce a dx9 game.

2k4 runs with 60 fps at school with 1200Mhz and 128 mb ram... max detail or lowest detail only makes very little difference

same thing here btw..

on my rig the game runs just as smooth (actually the problem was that it didnt feel 100% smooth) with maximum detail as it does when I set it to minimum :\ really weird

ti4200 is still a good card for dx8 games, but for dx9 and AA and other gimics you need a better card like the 9600

also if you try higher res you will see that the ati 9600 stays on high fps while the ti4200 will get slower.

other then that there is no need to upgrade your card if you already have a ti4200 or 4400/4600

for higher res you go for the better cards.

Why anyone would buy a GeForce Ti instead of a Radeon 9600XT is beyond me.

I second this guy. In my experience, ATI excels in render effects such as AA and AF. I get virtually no frame loss between AA off and 6xAA.

Nvidia TI cards rock, I still use a TI4600 and whoop up on the FX series in benchmarks. I wouldn't trade out my TI for an FX if you gave it to me.

Now, a 9800 pro ATI, is a better card than my TI4600, but I have no problems AT ALL with mine so why dish out 400 bucks for bragging rights.. bahh

if your processor is good there is no reason at all to upgrade

just wait one year and get the 9800 xt when its needed for half the price
