I just don't see how Doom 3 can compete with UT2k4

I ordered the DVD SE and I just can't imagine how Doom 3 is going to compete with UT2k4, even if there is a Doom3 SE.

AFAIK there is just going to be one gametype, 8-player DM. Maybe the third party community will put together some good gametypes but outside of what we've seen with Half Life's Counterstrike, I don't see many third party gametypes taking a game with little to offer multiplayer-wise, and making it last long online.

I totally understand it's going to be a graphically advanced engine, with some degree of realism, but that alone doesnt' make a game great. I worry about the gameplay as well as the content. I just don't see them offering as much as UT2k4's 105 levels, 17 weapons (with alternate fire modes on most), 9 vehicles and 8 gametypes.

Not much is known about Doom 3 yet. My guess is that Doom 3 will have a better single-player campaign and UT:2k4 will dominate multiplayer.

    Time will tell. :X

Yeah.....Doom 3's game is purely a creepy and frightening single player experience. Not really the same kind of game.....but long term appeal no doubt will lie with UT2004 and its community because of the online focus.

      It won't compete with Half-Life 2 either, that's for **** sure. ;o)

Doom 3 isn't being designed as a multiplayer game. It's a singleplayer experience. The games are so different I think it's pointless to even try to compare them.

doom3 will be like a benchmark for the newest machines, dont see any other use for it.

Uh, Doom 3 might not sell as many copies in the long run as HL2, but it's hyped nearly as much if not more. Doom 3 is going to give HL2 a run for it's money in the first few months of total sales.

I think Doom 3 is mainly going to be single player so it doesnt have to compete.

Also they are showing of there engine which is what will compete with unreal. There is alot of money to be made by letting other game developers use there engine.

The big thing Doom is doing is there engine has hit boxes that are shaped like the models, as far as i know other games all have uniform box around all there models so you cant shoot between the legs of your opponent, in doom you should be able to miss between the legs or under the arm.

Per-Pixel Hit Detection, So if you hit em in the arm.. its gonna
                hurt in the arm.

In regards to how good a game it is, not how much it sells......

I don't tend to judge games by sales, otherwise i'd think The Sims was a more astounding game than Total Annihilation. =)

I heard that because of their new vertex based hit detection there were some players at the Quakecon that were sure the weapons aim were all off in the game. lol.

They were so used to hitting the invisible box around the enemy that actually aiming for center mass was a new concept.

Well, usually competition is judged in terms of sales. There's really no other way for Doom 3 to "compete" with HL2 other than with a hard number.

                      Also, TA > *.

                        HL2 is non exsistant.

                        Doom 3 is a $60 benchmark.

                          people will buy both.

remember the "pepsi vs coke" cola wars increased sales of BOTH.

                          doom3 is singleplayer goodness.

                          ut2k4 is primarily mp goodness.

both imply new technology, new rigs.

both will drive sales as folks invest in new rigs and will want BOTH.

imagine somebody buyign a rig which can handle these games and not owning them all?

doom3 wont compete agenst ut2004 (at least for me) but i will probably buy it because it looks like it will be a very good single player game with graphics that are ahead of there time (if they release it soon).

                              want to place bets?

this is the biggest assumption in the history of gaming: that HL2 will have another CS.

prepare for mass hysteria and disappointment.

there is no good reason to make that assumption (that hl2 will have tons of good, quality mods).

valve has already shown themselves to be liars just in it for $$$, so any solid mods will be SOLD through steam, not free mods.

valve didnt make the original hl engine. they didnt make the mod tools. they got lucky.

folks give them way too much credit beyond making ONE single good SP game.
