    Ut4

Any recent word about this? I know EPIC said they were shelving the series for awhile but man, 2004 was a gem of a game and I just started playing it again. I remember spending hours in the greatest invasion servers ever...so much community effort made those servers a blast. And playing death match until the early hours of the morning, winning most every time :P. Let's not forget Assault, sacrificing myself for the sake of winning on some of the most creative maps I've seen.

And then there was UT3, which I just couldn't get into no matter how much I tried to. I just want to play a game just like this again....because I would pay 100 dollars for a game as fun as this was and still is. This game is what got me into video games, I used to hate them. I spent most of the passing years playing console games, Halo 3 and Gears of War...Call of Duty as well although I never really liked the Call of Duty games. My favorite game as of now is definitely Battlefield Bad Company 2.

Anyway, I hope EPIC is considering trying again...but this time...without focusing so much on graphics...I don't need amazing graphics and I think sometimes developers forget what really matters...and that's the gameplay. You can forget the people who buy the games for the eye candy because those aren't the people who stick around. There were many changes to the mechanics and I just thought I wasn't really playing UT anymore...the UT I knew atleast.

The fact that I still find this fun after 7 years! is saying something very profound, and I don't think the same could be said for any other game. I have a horribly small attention span for games, I get bored of them so quick. Never got bored of this.

Last word from Epic was something like no UT4 on the horizon, and if it was it'd be a UE4 title, and iirc that they expect to use UE3 for next gen consoles as well. I know it sounds wack to me too, maybe I misunderstood. I'd like to believe that they arre working on the best UT ever, and aren't going to say a word until it's already a fairly polished game.

Well, if you looked at the history and the naming scheme, you would see that they release one UT per engine. And one Unreal per engine. So far there has not been Unreal III...

For me UT3 seemed a slight improvement over UT2k4 (if you don't look at the story of course). But it's so much more effort to make mods for the newer engine, that i think UT3 suffered alot because of that in the community. UT99 is still the best of the UT series though, definitely

BTW, why would you need another UT if UT2004 is excellent as it stands?

No to 1.1 and yes to 1.2 and 2.1. Can't say anything about 1.3, the graphics would be too ancient for me.

for me ut in overall series is unique with their flaws and lights I like all of them, as shadow said there is still some server to play and a good buch of good mod like bw and junkwars and others mutators weapon and vehicles to enjoy with.

            long life ut!

2k4 is really a departure from the classic UT formula, one which UT 3 comes closer to (with some changes of its own.) It's also an exception in the way that it included the entirety of 2k3 (because 2k4 was basically an attempted apology to all the original fans who were driven away by all the drastic gameplay changes,) which lead to people who entered at 2k4 looking at UT3 and wondering why it didn't have two whole games worth of content...

When 2k3 came out, much of the original fanbase had the same reaction that the 2k4 fanbase had to UT3.
Personally, I substantially prefer the heavier, closer-range gameplay of UT3, and feel that if they're going to go the agile, leaping about everywhere, using adren abilities route, that UC2 was a much more polished vision of that approach.

Unfortunately, I have a feeling they've moved on from Unreal entirely, now. Each version has been so different, anyway, that there's really no way to release another one without p**sing-off a large section of their fanbase.

I enjoyed the freedom of movement that 2k3/2k4 had. It allowed for a lot of creativity/flexibility in combat or moving through the map that the heavy feel of UT3 didn't do much for me, even though it didn't affect the game that much, it just made it feel more linear. But thats a deadbeat horse.

Back on topic yes there will be a UT4, and no it won't arrive till 2015-2018. I wouldn't hold your breath for it, it's a long ways out.

I didn't mind UT3 at all, had plenty of fun it (almost as much as in 2k3/2k4) but as for mapping I got too busy in life (now I'm a genuine oldy) and the process to create maps just started to be too idiosyncratic and disjointed with UT3 (for many small but annoying reasons).

I don't want a UT4 personally! What I would love is a PROPER new UNREAL game, ignoring Unreal II and going back to the first game but done in a new engine (UE4) with multiplayer added on. Just like in the old days. If that goes down well and the MP stands up then do a UT4 that is cross compatible with the maps made for Unreal3

                  or something /

Well, but this may remain a dream (forever).

If it becomes reality someday then I'll buy both games for sure!

I seriously doubt we'll get a Unreal III anytime soon, if ever. I for one vote we do not get it. Here is my reasoning: it would likely sell poorly and put the deathnail in Unreal and UT forever. What we need is a good solid "tournament title." I even think something like UC3 on the consoles might do well. In fact I think that might be the best bet, and really now is a prime time too try it again. UC2 was a well executed game and would have gained more fans for the series if it was not released a month after Halo 2. Now the Halo bug has passed a good bit, and shooter fans are also getting a good bit played out on CoD, and all of that mess. If Epic could quickly develoop, but not rush a "UC3" to the market within a year and a half, it could be what the franchise needs. I have always thought UT3 was less about "being more like UT99," but more about trying to gain mass appeal. That's why they "Halo-fied" it with loads of vehciles (not a UT staple), and made it less "bouncy." The series really took off on a massive scale with UT2004, arguably the most bouncy game they've ever made. The orignal UT was moderately successful, 12 years ago, in a VERY different market.(PC games were more predominant)

I've never been a really one of those gamers that thinks of my self as PC only, or console only. I play whatever I like. Take the PS3 for instance. You can play UT3 with a keyboard and mouse if you wish. It even supports custom levels and so on. Today's market is very driven by the console, like it or not. PC gaming is quickly becoming archaic for most. It's just the world we live in now....iTabs, iPhones, being mega "pluged in" on the go. Lots of people use their phone in lieu of a PC, and sit down on ther couch to play a video game. That is not to say a PC game cannot be very succesful; look at WoW (eesh).

Things just have to change and we have to be willing to accept that UT would likely need to be successful on the consoles to support the PC players wants. We can still have a our UT, but it needs to make $.$$ because that's the name of the game. After all this is business in the end. IDK...I'm ranting now...lol

I haven't seen anyone who doesn't want Unreal III, and plenty of people who do want it. And I don't see why you should ignore Unreal II - it wasn't a very replayable game, but that doesn't mean that its story is bad. Besides, remember Epic's style - never bring back heroes from old games, even if they end ambiguously, sweet-and-sour endings, yet be at least somewhat consistent with the timeline. That should work nicely for Unreal III as well - there are a plenty of people in the galaxy that have their stories to tell, after all.

And I will never agree that PC gaming is "dead" or "dying". It's as dead as game developers want it to be. You create a half-baked port from consoles to PC and then assume it will sell like pancakes? And then you complain about the market being dead or blame everything on piracy, yet it's your own fault! In fact, there should never be straight ports from console games since players are quite different on the two platforms. Ideas can stay the same, sure, but since the player attitudes are quite different, they need to be changed according as well. For instance, if you have a console and buy a console game, you expect it to work immediately, have standard graphics and default configuration and allow you to play a few seconds after you insert the medium. However, if you buy a PC game, you expect to have control over it. You expect a map editor, a good configuration list, plenty of options for modding and customisability. And you're not afraid to balance the game to achieve the best visuals/performance level. So that's my opinion on this.

I agree with that for the most part, except the part about Unreal II. I played that game when it came out, and it was very meh to say the least. My main point that I failed to convey is that the old format of stand alone, single player first person shooters just won't work today. Doom 3 was only marginally successful. Even Quake 4, which had a pretty solid multiplayer and SP was not recieved super well. I wouldn't call it a failure, but I would not call it a success either. PC gaming certainly is not dead, but it is certainly not what it was 12 years ago either. Console ports? I've heard that many times before, but correct me if I'm wrong..UT3 came out on PC months before the consoles. I understand the whole "consolized" gripe and agree with it to an extent. All I'm saying is we don't have to accept a "consoleized game," but we do have accept that if it does not sell on colsoles in addition to the PC, the game will likely not make enough $$$ to garner a UT5, U3, or what have you. All about those dollar signs....For it to be successful on consoles it needs to be a little more flashy, AND timed correctly. UT3 was too fast in the wrong areas, and too slow in others. Result: epileptic frenzy for most. The only thing postive I can say about that game is that some of the levels looked great (looked), and a FEW of the guns looked awesome as well. Other than that, it was a trash heap, and most gamers, AND UT fans seem to agree. We always have to remember what made UT2004 so sucessful: it's a goood bit different than the average FPS. UT..not so much...UT3...not so much. That's the main problem IMO.

I reinstalled UT3 & the Titan pack a few days ago. I have to admit, it's actually not that bad (as I last remembered it). It's quite fun, but in its own way... not as a UT.

I think the 3 biggest mistakes of UT3 are:
                            1. Calling it UT3, they should've called it ANYTHING else... Unreal Arena, Unreal Destruction... whatever, just so long as it's not called Tournament or Championship
                            2. Advertising it as a Tournament title; if it was promoted as a spin-off title instead of a sequel, A LOT of people wouldn't have been too hard on it or compared it to 2K4; I mean if people simply took it as a game on its own (an Unreal spinoff) and not a sequel, it's actually not that bad of a game
                            3. Horrid hybrid, awkward SP. If the SP had more polish and was less Tournament-like, it would've been better. If you could choose your side in SP, so you could be Liandri or IG in SP, it would've actually been a respectable SP champaign.

I don't want a new UT but I've said this so many times I think everybody knows by now

However, that gave me the following idea:
How about an Unreal game (doesn't have to be Unreal III, how about another spinoff game?) where you play the bad guys (and maybe conquer planets and command your troops in 1st person)? You could play a Skaarj Trooper for example and later you get a higher rank and can command more Skaarjs, a bit like an RTS but in 1st person. Could be quite amusing, but I admit that it is not necessary though.
