rebates mean nothing to me. you will only get about 1 or 2 out of every 10 rebates that you mail off.

half the time i dont even mail them.

so im not worried about any rebates. i bought old unreal, ut, ut goty. ut2003, soon ut2004 and the next game after that in 2006. wait,. not 2006 because it will be pushed to 2007.

I really think the problem is not that epic is not going to make 2k3 compatible, but that they supported a game for less than a year (albeit 2k3 was a dud, player count wise). Actually, make that about ten months, its been a long time since the last 2k3 patch.

The way I see it, is that they spent around 3 years since the final patch for UT, so we can only assume they were working on 2k3 in this time. This is about the standard lead in time for a cutting edge PC game/engine, witnessed by the development time btw q1>q2>q3, insert most popular 1st person shooters, etc.

Now I know this is not going to be well received here, but I would like to know how the f@#@ did epic develop 2k4 which is being sold as a ‘new’ game, when it only had like 6-8 months of development? Were the top programmers at epic already working on 2k4 while 2k3, which was riddled with problems upon release (console interface, suicides not counted, no freaking demo record, no UTV, no demo/beta for feedback, whacked physics and netcode, scaling issues, horrid maps, counting bots as players in stats/server browser, etc) was left to flounder and die along with the UT community (which many here worked very hard to build)?

The only plausible explanation in my mind as to how epic is justifying making 2k4 anything but a bonus pack which should be around 15 bucs, is that they hired such a large number of programmers as to cut the development time of this ‘new’ game, 2k4, into an 8 month timeframe. I really hope epic is not setting a trend in the PC gaming industry utilizing 8 month development cycles and considering it something there customers should pay full price. Although, we (not counting 2k3 fanboys) the consumer can take solace in the fact that judging by the number of players playing 2k3, Its not likely!!!!!!

im glad it isnt going to be compatible. more time to work on ut2004.

maybe they can release a patch for the work they already put into the patch in the first place. better net coding and the other fixes.

I am not a person that worries about conspiracies. Apparently, since you've brought it up, you've thought about it though.

Im not going to repeat myself. The people who have been following this thread, i believe, understand my stance and going through it all again for u is pointless.

You put your money into UT2k3. Fine, ***** about UT2k3; but why are you b1tching about UT2k4 being not compatible...??? You already put money into it...???

Because it seems that this also means that support for UT2k3 has been completly dropped now. And all the bugs and security issues in UT2k3 probably will never be fixed by Epic.

Again, read the thread to find out why. You are being lazy.

UT2k4 = same maps, same Gametypes, security issues and bugs are solved and/or taken care of. So I don't care...
On the other hand I believe that there will be another patch for UT2k3.

Hmmm, I read the whole thread. Unfortunately I read the first four or five pages yesterday and cannot remember every single post... ...so yes I am too lazy, because I don't care, since as a player (who will buy UT2k4 the day it comes out) I am not affected.

And for the MOD-issues (mods not being comaptible). Most of the code that was changed in the engine's netcode won't affect the mods. So what, then...

Give me a break. UT2003 will be completely worthless even if we still had compatability. Chances are that anybody that DOENST buy ut2003 will either be a stupid n00b or an idiotic whiner. Nobody that anybody would want to play against. This incombatibility won't change a thing at all, and I find it rediculous there's even disucssion on this.

Then player go play and leave the issues that this thread is following to this thread.

The problem i have, is that the mod i work for, SAS, is going to have to split its servers between 2k3 SAS and 2k4 SAS. Halving our fanbase. And with the vastly fallen numbers of mod players around (which is suprising considering the quality of 2k3 mods) that is a big blow.

I think SAS should become 2k4 only...

I think the impact on the mod community won't be determined until 2004 ships out.

Honestly, if all epic is doing is tweaking the code for performance, I'm sure we're not going to have too big an issue.

                            From a coder's perspective...

If the function calls are all the same and the function returns are the same, it should all be compatible.

If the inheritance hierarchy is broke, then there will be issues too.

I don't think its going to be as big an issue as everyone is making it sound. Heck, maybe epic will be nice and leave some legacy stuff in the codebase so you guys don't have to rip every piece of code apart.

As for two different versions, my bet is that initially people won't jump on... I know i haven't put down a pre-order yet, but thats only because I won't until i hear a set shipping date, since I need to know where in the country i'll be (ie. home or school). My guess is that at least 50% of the current user base will make the switch, and maybe we'll pick up some more people (i've been telling my friends who want 2k3 to wait until 2k4). It's up to the mod makers who they want to support. You can't make everyone happy, thats a given. IMHO, this is no different than moving from UT to UT2003... My favorite mods (Chaos, U4E) all made the jump to 2K3 and haven't touched their UT versions since.
