Lets be honest, Games these days are created with the same aspect in mind: Console first, PC later. I first cam to notice this with the Menu system on ut2k3, which was blatently designed for the console user in mind. Im getting mighty fed up of games that are obviously having to be tweaked and / or converted for use of the PC.
Prime Example? GTA3. The Playstation version was the dogs. It ran well, was enjoyable and PC gamers couldnt wait to get their mits on it. Then it arrived and even tho most high end machine was not running the game well. The code conversion was poor and the fun was lost outa the game.
The real reason i am writing this thread is Need For Speed: Underground. I have played NFS games for years and have always loved them. My favourite was the legendary NFS Porsche Challenge. On Monday i resisted the temptation to dive onto bit torrent to see if it was on there and went and bought it. BIG MISTAKE
I had some issues with the screen freezing from the moment it installed, and from a quick read of the ReadMe i found that "NFS Underground has some 'issues' with Catalyst Drivers 8.8 & 8.9. If you are experiencing problems then plz revert back to Catalyst Drivers 3.7" WTF? Oh, cus not many people will be using 8.7+ drivers! ffs. Next, the game will not update in order that you can play online. You click "online play" and it closes down, launched IE and downloads the patch until some little icon goes :up:Installed Successfully:up:... No it isnt
You fire up the game again and too my immense annoyment it says there is a patch that is required for online play. Grrrrrr
Once you get to play the game it isnt bad mind! Its not the best NFS game ever made but its kind of addictive. But mid race the screen will just freeze! The game does not crash, you can still hear the game running, but the screen is just frozen. I fail to see how developers, especially one such as EA which has a fairly hefty foothold in the market, and has been around a while, can afford to release such shoddy versions, and / or support and yet complain about people downloading games instead of buying them. £30 for a game that wont run on the latest drivers of one of the top 2 most popular GFX card manufacturers seems like sheer laziness to me in order that i can make the release date for the XBOX and PS2, which im sure are tweaked to perfection no doubt. Im sick of this ****, and the game is going back once iv cracked it
