Do you know what I think? Everyone that buys Dell, HP, Compaq, Alienware, or other piece of insanely overpriced low quality sh*t, need to know about the cheaper way.

Why feed the monsters with your money when you can get higher quality parts for less? If you´re happy with your Alienware, you´ll stop smiling if you put your computer together yourself with exact same parts and look at the price.

Knowledge is power, if you know how to put a computer together and you know what´s going on with each brand, use that power to your advantage.

w00t. Convinced my parents that I'd like RAM before a hard disk.

        Does your motherboard support that?

You've gotta make sure you get the right type of ram. For a 2ghz cpu you have a good chance of having sdram, not ddr sdram. Or even worse, it could be rdram. I'm not sure what rdram looks like, but sdram will have 2 notches in the stick. DDR sdram will have 1 notch. You need to pull a stick out to see what you have, or use a system anyliser(sp?, my brain is dead today:noob: ) such as belarc, or Sandra, so you can be sure of getting the right type of ram. Also there are sometimes compatability issues even if the ram is the right type. You should check the ram manufacturers website to see if your comp is supported for the type of ram you intend on buying.

It may sound weird, but terminate explorer.exe (I have 256MB ram too and it helps). Also, close almost everything from the task manager thats unneeded.

I know, I've got similar ones from each category picked out, so I've got something no matter what what my cpu accepts.

EDIT: could someone tell me, specifically, how to tell the difference between types of RAM sticks?

There I just built you a BETTER system with better quality parts (not used, junk or refurbs) for less than what you paid with dell. I could build you the SAME system with **** parts like dell uses for about $200.00 bucks less. Your friend doesn't know how to shop.

Do you know the make and model of your motherboard? If so it will be easy to find out what type of RAM it takes There are various programs which will tell you this if you don't know, eg. cpu-z.

huray someone found a dell that's cheaper then when you make it yourself. truth is if i would buy and build a computer yourself you wouldnt use those parts to begin with. the parts a good gamer need/wants arent those i can tell ya. if you want a real gaming comp you shouldnt buy a dell. (that dell is cheaper with making garbage shouldnt even be the issue here)

p4 3.4 ht (from Intels little known dropped and damaged line)
160 sata hd (from maxtor with chipped platters)
cdrw(doesn't actually read or write cds)
dvdrw +- dual layer (dual layer actually refers to the lineup in the case it's 2nd down from the top)
1024 mb ddr2 533( gives a multitude of errors, actually only 64k is good)
6600( really a Voodoo2, everybody knows Nvidia doesn't let Dell use their good chipsets)

I'm having trouble seeing where the **** components are. They may not be for the enthusiast, but they're all top quality parts guarantied for a year or longer. You can't overclock or modify heavily but it will run well within spec for many years.

lol at first i thought this was another dell is **** post nice post by the way. so far my dell 8400 with these specs is great. and for a 6 month old system the price of 700 was nice. Never had any crashes or lock ups with ut2004 my previous amd based system had some trouble. but honestly a good try for the attempt to out do my pricing
