hmm? AA? AF? Just wondering if these are settings I've got on, that I shouldn't :P

And merrell, the closest thing I have to a background program is *occasionally* msn, but I always close out the window before I start a game. And yes, most everyone here IS on drugs..

Or is it "ARE on drugs.." O_o

nope they're just spending too much time in #ina.ut - its not good for you that chan i swear.

i think what would help greatly would be more ram and a larger hard drive.

          another thing I'm wondering:

what else is important in RAM other than size? Cause there's a 256 mb stick on tigerdirect.ca for 47$ O_O

EDIT: and another for 28$ O_O are they made of cardboard? they must be crappy somehow!

Yea, as others have said, you may want to look into getting more ram. 1GB should suffice. I have a gig and I can load a ONS map in under 10 seconds with close to highest settings. If you really want to splurge, buy a whole new computer.

Bottom line: Ram is mainly responsible for the game loading speed. If you want faster loading time, buy more ram.

Speed, type, and CAS latency of RAM also affect prices greatly. Rambus is going to cost the most, with DDR in second-place, while normal SDRAM is going to cost the least. Obviously, the higher the speed, the more pricey the RAM. In contrast, the lower the CAS latency, the more expensive the RAM.

Anyhow, 256MB of RAM isn't very much, no matter what type/speed/latency it is. You can get a 512MB stick of brand-name CAS2.5 PC3200 DDR for just $40 on Newegg, and that's quite good.

                okies...

for comparison, what would be a slow/fast speed? and a slow/fast latency?

(heh, for those who've heard of three dead trolls in a baggie: "To figure out how much RAM you need, think of a number - well, think of the biggest number you can think of, and multiply it by 8! That's how much RAM you need.")

CAS2 is the current lowest available latency, but CAS2.5 is the best bang-for-your-buck (and isn't slow, by any means.) Slow CAS latency? I wouldn't ever go to CAS3 or slower.

As for speeds, 800mhz (DDR400/PC3200) is pretty good. Anything higher is really good. DDR333/PC2700 (666mhz) is okay, and anything below that I'd consider rather slow.

That's all said with DDR in mind, seeing as regular (non-DDR) SDRAM is too slow for any gamer, and Rambus has pretty much been phased out due to insane overpricing. Not to mention that Intel (who was it's only supporter) dropped it in favor of DDR a while back.

The final problem: I need a hard drive AND ram. I've got 120$ now, enough to get one of them fairly soon. Should I get a hard drive or more RAM?

I'm sorta leaning towards RAM, cause I can survive for a while at least with my current hard drive, and I'll at least see a dramatic change with a big RAM upgrade.

HOWEVER. I have a mother who doesn't want me to get sucked into computer upgrades. I got a motherboard a year ago, a video card a month ago, and I'm sure she'll disapprove of me getting both ram and a hard disk.

                    hmm....

..I guess it IS my money, and after RAM and hd i don't expect to upgrade my PC for a very long time... Im probably just gonna get a PS3 or Rev for christmas or something...

Alright, thanks for all the help! :P

                              Quite right.

A Dell might be ok for someone that doesn't care about price for power, upgrade opportunities, decent choice of components, etc (list can go on), but for someone concerned with performance (in this case loading times) and is computer hardware litterate enough to replace components, a Dell would be a horrible mistake and a terrible waste of money.

                                +1!!

Dells are the biggest piles of **** I have ever seen! Charging people BIG BUCKS for inferior and refurbed **** parts. The last dell I fixed for some lady I could have built for about $320.00, and she played close to $2,000.00 for it! I can't believe the **** they get away with. The mobo in her system cost $18.00 bucks at fry's in the clearance bin. What a bunch of junk.

in any case, here was my fix for long loading times, not sure if it will help you or not:
