    loading times

Before I even start, here's my computer specs:

Processor: 2.0 ghz, I forget what brand but it's a major one
    Video card: ATI Radeon 9250
    RAM: 256 megs
Hard Drive: 18 gigs, full to the top

My problem is map loading times. They simply take forever. For example, the last map I played (Aridoom) took slightly over 3 minutes to load. Some, like Dria, are worse. And even 1 on 1 DM maps are about 2 - 2 1/2 minute load times.

The only hardware issues I could think of would possibly be my RAM, or maybe the fact my hard drive is just about full.

Should I really expect such lousy loading times from my computer? If not, is there something I'm doing wrong? O_o

(btw, load times are almost exactly the same on maximum display settings compared to minumum settings)

    disable any preload
    check any adware/spyware
    defragment

What speed RAM? Ensure you've defragmented recently and have the option to preload all player-skins disabled, also.

For something like UT2004, your specs are ****. Particularly RAM and HD.

I have lesser comp specs and it loads in like 20 seconds.

yeh. i think the main problems are HD (get a new one, we aren't in 20th century) and RAM (add minimum 256 and it should be good)

                      Whoa.

First of all, you have 256mb RAM which is waaay too low imo. I have 512 and I wish I had 1024.

When your RAM is full, Windows tries to use a part of your HD as memory (Virual Memory), but now it can't because as you said that's full too. :bulb:

So that's one area where you can 'optimize' UT (free up HD space).

Second, you can make UT use less RAM then default. Turn 'Preload Player Skins' off in your settings menu, and use 16bit textures. That should help some atleast.
This site has some more tweaks, check it out.

well, that's more or less good news to me. I've got 120$, saving for a 160$ 200 gig hard drive. Then (if my mom lets me, cause she doesnt want me to be "sucked into computer upgrading"), ima get another 256 megs of ram.

btw #1: I get "your system is low on virtual memory" errors every time I play UT now. Soon after, when I just finish loading a map, my computer restarts itself O_o

btw #2: I'm reformatting my HD this weekend, gonna get all the **** out of it.

So thanks for verifying my fears XD looks like I know where my next 250-some $ are going.

EDIT: hmm.. I've got my HD down to 6.76 gigs of free space. I've still gotta reinstall Halo and Halo CE, which'll end up taking a good 3 gigs of it, but would that be enough to stop my comp from getting the virtual memory errors?

Done. And the reason i quit was because i wanted to keep my sanity.

Anyway, enough with off-topic. That rig is (Like everyone else has said) too slow. More ram and a even better processor would help quite a lot.

meh, I've better things to buy than a new computer every half year. I'll put up with the load times.

*can still play on max settings (- trilinear) thanks to half-*** video card *
