    VIA Chipset WinXP/Nvidia Card Fix

    Hi all.

    Just managed to play UT2003 for the first time for over 20 mins so far, thanks to the fix found here:

    Original Patch Address (broken url):
    www.pcbuyersguide.com/hardware/motherboards/VIA-Problems.html

    New Patch Address: Test_driver1.zip
    ReadMe Address: Readme.txt

    Download and READ the README in the BETA PATCH.

    Here was our problem
    ====================
    On both My System & my brothers system it quits to desktop and other times it needs a hard reset.

    We can fool about with the menus and stuff but as soon as we try to play it crashes.

    I think we have had 20 seconds of play at most.

    Specs
    ==============
    #1
    ABIT KT7A-RAID
    AMD Athlon 1.4
    Win XP Pro SP1
    512 MB RAM
    Abit GF4 Ti 4200
    Detonator Drivers 30.82
    Creative Audigy Player

    #2
    ABIT KT7A
    AMD Athlon 1800
    Win XP Home SP1
    256 MB RAM
    GF2 MX440
    Detonator Drivers 30.82
    Creative Audigy Player

    ==========================

    Anyway.
    I still need to test more, but considering I've gone from it never woking to long play time I am very pleased.

    Hope it works for others with similar problems/systems.

    ===================================

    Man, if I ever meet you I owe you a beer! =)

    I have a setup pretty close to you and have had nothing but problems getting it to work. I spent hours trying everything I can think of to get it working. Just as I was about to give up I stumbled upon your post. I gave it a try and lo and behold it worked! Not only UT2 but other games that I was having similar problems with.

    Thx again,

      we may have a winner here

      i too after a fresh brand spanking new install of XP and fresh install of drivers was having no more than 10-20 seconds of gameplay before a hard reboot and looping errors was finally able to play one whole map...bbl

        The whole fiasco reached something of a climax in Dec. 2001, when nVidia released an updated (23.11) version of its Detonator drivers that seemed to cause no end of troubles for Windows XP users of motherboards based on VIA chipsets. VIA responded to allegations of compatibility and stability problems in places such as the Via Arena forum by saying it was an innocent victim, and that the graphics drivers themselves were the source of the problems. However, this didn't stop the company from releasing a beta patch incorporating a fix expected to be part of the company's next version of the 4in1 drivers -- along with an apology for using end users as "guinea pig testers."

              You are a star. Installed the patch and just played a whole map without crashing.

              Specs:-
              Abit KT7A m/board
              1gig Athlon processor
              GF 4 ti4200
              SB Audigy Platinum

              Had problems with Warcraft 3 too, so I need to test that as well, but so far it looks like the problem's gone.

                Glad to hear it's working for others

                Forgot to mention that the two mobo's I've got are the KT7A-RAID and the KT7A from ABIT.

                  How do I know if my card is manufactured by VIA? It came with my Dell and under system infromation it tells me that it was manufactured by NVidia itself.

                  I don't want to install the patch withou being sure of this issue first.

                  Do I also need to downgrade my drivers before installing this?

                    Oh... sorry... VIA is a MoBo manufacturer. I don't have one. So this fix is useless for me...
                    (sigh)

                    Thanks for your help anyway...

                      I have the ASUS TUV4X motherborad (for PIII), and it is using VIA 694T chipset.

                      Can I install this patch?

                        Try it

                        Why not follow the link and download the patch.

                        You can then view the readme which has a few suggestions in it.

                        You do have the option of uninstalling it aswell.

                        If it were my board and it was not working, I'd give it a go.

                        =)

                        Been playing all day - sweet !

                          Hmmm,

                          Sys Info says Nvidia, sounds like that is your graphics card, Unless you have an Nforce motherboard.

                          If you want to know what mobo you have, you could always power it down and remove the case. There should be stickers or other markings showing your model number.

                          Careful you don't void your warranty though.

                          Once you have that info, search the web for updates, etc.
                          Good luck
