    SUGGESTION: Compressed autodownloaded content

    Hi,
I think the auto-downloaded content (like maps, etc) that is sent to clients should be compressed - at maximum (or high) compression. I mean I went to a server which had "ONS-Aridoom" and a 21 Mb file started downloading... (but it is 5 Mb when zipped)

Maybe the server could look for non-standard maps like "ONS-Aridoom.ut2" and create a compressed version ("ONS-Aridoom.ut2.zip") if one doesn't already exist. Then the client could receive that zipped file and automatically unzip it. (Perhaps automatically deleting the zip file)

The benefits are - less annoyance for players, less bandwidth usage for servers (assuming that players normally use the autodownload feature)

    UCC
    ucc compress
Compress an Unreal package for auto-downloading. A file with extension .uz will be created.
Try running "ucc help" it has lots of cool stuff.

      Cool...!

Well I don't have a server, but I think server admins should be forced to use that compression feature (or at least compression should be used by default). (For the sake of the player's convience - it means far shorter delays when accessing new content)

you just compress them using windows to uz2 files and put them up on redirect..you cant have a zip file on your server..the full map has to be on the server and the compressed uz2 file on a redirect site.

all redirect servers use compressed files, thats the whole purpose of a redirect system, to take load off the server and to redirect any downloads to an external http:// redirect server.

Every single server admin i know who works for a GSP or similar organisation uses compressed redirect.

the only ppl who run a redirect without compressed files are ppl who shouldnt be running servers...

yeah..it would be a waste of money to have redirect without compressing them..bottom line..but I think he is probley talking about ppl that are hosting from thier PC at home that dont have a redirect site..if thats the case then they shouldent be hosting anything but the content that came with the game.

Actually I think it was Game Arena, which is from a major Australian ISP (BigPond). But at least it had autodownload set up for that map. A server I tried before that had the map version that didn't automatically download.

              I found this:
              http://uz2.gameservers.net/upload/
Redirection basically sends people who connect to your server to a website to download any custom files which the player does not have. Once this is done the player is sent back to your server who can now enter the game, this is all done without the player noticing i.e. it looks like a normal download from the server.
And it says about how you can use compressed files (.uz and uz2)

yes, jsut a pet peeve though that is copied directly from one of my tutorials without any links or credit a void of the copyright.

Although, since they are one of the major public redirects
