Server to client frame rate cap?

Can someone that knows something enlightlen me to if this has been changed or not?

I was allways under the impression that there was a 85 cap in place and that is how it works for me and any adjustments made to the maxclientframerate= in the .ini is not going to over ride that cap!

I cannot go over the 85 cap as a client in my server or any other server that I have joined and I have joined at least 100. However I can exceed that cap in other forms of single player action and that is the way I understand it should be.

But in another forum this guy insists that his clients are all going over the frame rate cap and he is not using any mutator to uncap it?

Heres the thread and im pretty sure I am talking the right stuff here but?

If the Server maxclient rate is set to ABOVE (iirc) 10000 or maybe 15000 and you set your netspeed to 15000 you can up your min frame rate to 100. It all works fine in practice, but can cause lag serverside for the players.

Sorry if that doesn't make much sense, at work at he mo.

the server isn't a factor at all if you're only interested in an FPS boost for yourself. You raise the cap that you mentioned earlier, then you type in the console NETSPEED 20000 or whatever and it will run greater than 85fps. Even in a 10000 netspeed server this will work. But you have to type it in the console, it won't work automatically with an .ini edit unless the server netspeed has been raised. At every map change, you'll have to type in netspeed 20000 again.

I got it to work fine just by making a few adjustments to my UT2004.ini and also my user.ini client side and server side!

I dont have to do any console commands after map switch I was just a bit un clear as to what needed to be adjusted in the .ini files is all.

Its all good now my friend!

Im not going to leave it set that way but I am glad I know it can be done..:salut2:

what i meant was that you can go into any server and get the boost always with the console command without any changes serverside.

            have fun.

Yes I see that and it is a neat little trick!

I wish that someone would have laid that out in that other thread "Just use the console command netspeed 20000 client side and it will bypass the server cap"

Would have saved me alot of writing and embarrassment! :hitting-self:

It's actually not a neat trick, it's a bug and probably one of the reasons why people have such bad experiences with uncapping. The server admins decides what maximum amount of data each client should be alotted and the client should not be able to override this as that increases the risk of saturating the line and causing PL and possibly ping spikes.

I would've suggested you tried this if it had occured to me that you were testing on servers with less than 10000 netspeed. After all, it was stated early on that 10000 netspeed was a requirement.

Ya, I probably should have said "neat little client side hack"! :nono:

But I have not really investigated this enough to know if that will indeed make a difference or not to the servers performance and connection if clients come in and falsely report there netspeed? I dont know if the server truely acknowledges this and sees that client as actually running at that speed or not? Maybe so but then dumps it through the map switch and setting the client back to normal? I am looking into it now as we speak though. I would think that if it was a bug or did pose a potential problem to servers then it would be addressed in a patch!

Just testing on servers using the default maxinternetclientrate=10000 nothing more nothing less! :mdr2:

if you're playing on a netspeed 10000 server, and you lift the framecap clientside and use console command netspeed 20000, all it will do is boost the clientside upload and FPS. It will not change what the server is sending to the client. The client will always send up a packet every other frame, so when you boost the framerate, you boost your upload as well. It will increase the amount of data that clients upload, but its still fairly small amount of bandwidth.

I never really seen any probs with it. I would be more worried about people whose framerate sucks and therefore upload is puny.

Not quite. For netspeeds below 10000 it sends 1pkt/2frames, above 10000 it sends 1pkt/1frame unless you set the FPS cap above 100 in which case it drops back to 1pkt/2frames. At least from what I've seen doing some "from the hip" testing...

How come when you type fixedfps 175 in the console it will raise your fps but cause a slow motion type of effect? Does this effect the server at all?
