I am new and looking to buy Unreal Tournament 2004. Which one should I buy, the dvd edition or regular or what. Also how do I get patches when I buy the game, and basically I need an overview of how the game works. Thanks.

DVD edition has lots of goodies if you're interested in using the level editor, with the bonus that you don't have to keep up with 6 CDs. Probably worth it.
Patches:
You have to download them yourself. The most reliable, easy- to- operate source for patches IMO is:

Overview:
Whoah!
UT2004 is one of the most feature- rich (and therefore most complicated) games I've ever seen, at any rate. Your best bet is to play through the single- player on whatever difficulty you think appropriate. Some basics of game mechanics:
1. You start with two weapons: shield gun and assault rifle. The assault rifle is total ****. The shield gun is both a shield and a melee weapon -- useful, but requires some learning.
2. Other weapons are scattered around the level for anybody to pick up. Getting a gun should be your first priority.
3. All weapons have two firemodes (default to left and right mouse buttons) -- learn them.
4. Movement is pretty complicated. Just running won't do you much good. Moves to learn:
- Dodge -- double tap any movement key and you'll dodge in that direction.
Dodge- jump -- jump in the middle of a dodge for extra distance. This takes practice, but it's important.
Double- jump -- jump at the highest point of a jump. Also takes practice.
5. Gamemodes in brief --
- Deathmatch -- kill as many people as you can. Most kills wins. No vehicles.
Team Deathmatch -- same as deathmatch but with teams.
Capture The Flag -- grab the other team's flag and carry it back to your base. Difficult to get the hang of, but my fave. No vehicles.
Invasion -- co- op mode vs. low- poly monsters. Fun. No vehicles.
Onslaught -- connect objectives and destroy the enemy base. This is where the vehicles are.
Others -- Assault, Domination, Bombing Run, Vehicle CTF, Mutant, Last Man Standing. All fun.
6. Custom content. UT series games are designed to be highly customizable. There is probably more user- made content for this game than you'll ever have time to investigate. Good luck.
Like I said, single player is the best place to learn the game basics... but online play is 100x more fun.
There are many servers available for the free demo, which is available at the link at the top of my post.
Good luck to you and congratulations on considering UT... it's been my mainstay game series for 5 years now, I hope it's as good to you as it has been to me.
And now, I've done my good deed for the day. Please God, spare poor Discord your wrath a little longer. :haha:
- Dodge -- double tap any movement key and you'll dodge in that direction.
