    Observations of a Noob...

    "Hi, I'm Sexxella, and I'm a noob."
    (all) "Hi, Sexxella."

So I've noticed a few things about being a noob and thought I'd share; Feel free to disagree or add your own thoughts.

First (and the most important point) is there are ways in which we noobs can be useful players in team games. I'll get to this in a minute, but it's true.

Second, work on the skills that will transform us into non-noobs ; )
A lot has been written on this particular subject but I'll just add my own opinions (and please post your own)

    1. Don't die as often:
You know where it says in the manual to always be moving? Yeah, that's pretty much true. Many of the only frags I've gotten have been when another player has been foolish enough to stay put, allowing me to put a rocket into his bottom.

    2. Translocator is your buddy:
Ever been in a firefight with a good player and notice how they always get you in the back? The good players have mastered the art of using the translocator in combat; They pull you towards them while dropping their translocator behind you... then Zap. Pretty good idea. I've been practicing with bots... it helps. Remember the quick switch method ( fire translocator, press and hold down alt-fire to locate, then (without releasing alt-fire) press fire to end up at your destination with your original weapon enabled) I'm not good enough to zip around like the good players do, but I now can do a few useful things like:
    Getting somewhere useful quickly
When I get to the somewhere useful, having a weapon ready.
When I start getting pounded, I can get away.

    3. Choose the right weapon for your skill:
On the forums you might notice that the rocket launcher is often referred to as 'the noob tube". Har har, but they have a point. While I'm busy working on my aim etc. with bots, when I go online I pick the weapons that I can actually be useful with; Like the rocket launcher, flack cannon, minigun etc. Things like the lightning gun are great, but if I never hit anything, it's not great to me.

    4. Be a useful noob team player:
I'm a noob. So what? I've still found ways to be a useful addition to the teams I'm on; It's just about figuring out how to be useful. For example:
Bombing run- Now my stats stink for BR, I hover around 25-30% efficiency... meaning I'm a noob. However, I'm always thinking about where to go and what to do to help the team. On some maps the goal is tough to get to and a noob with a flack cannon, or rockets can be a really good goalkeeper. Other times I play the middle; I run around and stay alive (translocator helps) so I can take a pass from the back and quickly shoot it to someone up front. I've found trying to score by myself doesn't work so well, and ****** my teammates off... however, finding a useful place to be, getting a pass and then dumping it off to the right teammate makes my team happy. And noob or not, my rockets hit just as hard as everyone else's do, so a noob can be a good fire support person covering another player with suppression fire to let them advance, or going after players who have one of your teammates in their sights.

Granted, none of this makes for the most glorious stats, but I find myself getting better, and I really find my teammates much more willing to teach after I've made some good passes, saves, and fragged that guy who was chasing them down.

We are the many, the proud, the noobs

    -Sexxella

I've just joined less than 10 minutes ago. Lol, talk about a real noob, eh? :noob:

I'll probably end up going into the game and asking people how to use the gun. I've played UT03 for quiet a while, though so it shouldn't be too hard. It was so long ago, though.

Sexxala - I too am a noob at UT2004 but have been playing online shooters for a few years so I'm not totally helpless. But, one thing I ALWAYS do is just drop into games and spec the good players. Just watch what they do and take mental notes. Remember also to press the F4 key to switch the camera angle to first person so you're not watching them from a 3rd person perspective. Another thing I always do when I first start playing FPS games is to stick to DM games first. DM is where you "cut your teeth" so to speak. Learn basic weapon/movement and such before you really get into the team based games. You'll be surprised how even a month or 2 of DM can elevate your game. Hope some of this helps and happy fragging

Hey, you can learn things from noobs! I never knew F4 was the behindview toggle key! I never cared to bind it or see if there is an existing bind because I'm just a Console Guy!

Wadda ya know! Prob saved like 5-10 minutes of my lifetime total there! Congrats

            Nice points sexxella.

I'm definately a noob myself, & you make sense.
I was playing a team DM yesterday, we were getting pounded by the other team; they were better than us and they were also pretty much controlling the sheildbelts & health.

As a result I tended to find myself sticking in sight of my teammates, at longer ranges spending most of my time using the minigun to strip the shields from the opposition so the rest of the team had a hance to get some kills, and to try & keep them under fire while they were attacking the rest of my team.
Ok, I didn't get to go on any rampages or rambo rushes, but it helped to make the fights a bit more even for the rest of the team.

Trying to impress, & instantly be the man of the match is not going to remove those oh-so visible noob-tags (I'm sure we all have them ), you'll just end up losing the game..

Good tip for any new player (I refuse to use the "n" word)
Check out all the "sticky" posts (the ones at the top of the list)in this forum and general discussion.
There are a lot of guides or links to guides listed, some for strategy, team play, some for instruction on weapons/vehicles/etc. There are even practice maps around that are desigend specifically for instruction on how to aim, jump etc.
Read those, play offline for a while, and you won't get called the n-word.
If you do, just tell them to stfu.

What a sweet thing to sayhttp://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/images_ina_default/icons/icon16.gif

I am still new, but like I said new or not there are always ways to help your team; I think the trick is in finding the most useful thing to be doing at any given time based on your current capabilities and the situation.

There have been some good posts on this thread; Spectating matches with good players shows not only a lot of good tricks, but gives one an understanding of advanced strategy you can apply when playing yourself. I also agree that deathmatch play allows one to 'cut their teeth' on the basic move/aim/fire skills (and yes, I play instagib...really helps with aim)

On the subject of aim... I read a post here about improving aim by using the mouse to put the crosshairs near the target and then using movement keys to 'fine tune' for the shot. I've been trying it, and at least for me it's been great advice. Not only do I target faster, the process keeps you moving (always a good thing) and simply feels less chaotic and more precise. I'd reccomend everyone try it if they haven't already.

Regarding the stats thing, I'm not playing to get some prize, I play because it's fun. After matches I do go to my stats page (which shows incredibly detailed info) and I can see what's getting better and what needs work. And it's always nice to see you're getting better printed out in black and white

Perhaps someone has more to add regarding ways in which new players can make contributions in team play?

                    SEXXELLA RANDOM THEORY ALERT>>>
I have this theory that a group of average players with great communication and team skills can beat a bunch of 'better' lone wolf style players... Haven't had a chance to try it out yet.... but I will http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums...cons/icon1.gif

Oh, and please remember; If I shoot you online, It's just this girl's way of showing some lovehttp://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/images_ina_default/icons/icon12.gif

OMFG! i cant beleive i just read that.
for a newbie to say something like that is a mirical.

and you do have some good points.

                          adding to them:
it is a good idea to learn form better players. if you see some player doing a maneuver that you see is effective. it wont hurt to ask him/her how they did it.
ask questions about the game while you are playing when you see something that you dont understand. im sure that players are more that willing to help. i have had a n00b player on my INV server once. he said tht he had only bought the game about half an hour ago and was bombing me specifically with questions and trying to learn how to play and what to do.
although, my online helpfullness may be unique so stop by at the "Swiftgames RPG-Invasion server" and talk to me:heart:

yo have a first-person spec option, use it on other players to see what they are doing.
and heres the live server infomation on my fav inv server. it has a link which will make you automatically join the server from your desktop and it lists its IP.
my online name is in my sig

Crembels, I'm not really a new player (been on for a few months), my title just looks that way. I just don't post that often to the boards. I do a lot of playing on a private server with some friends.

I don't get how you can ask q's while you're playing though - it takes all my concentration not to get killed. I rarely even have time to look at the chat text.
But then again, I'm old (39)...

even the most experienced players still have things to learn.

the best time to ask q's is probably when your dead, or when you have joined a server as a spectator.
and whether your new or not is not dictaded by the amount of time you have been on the boards, or owned the game.
