Hey all, my frst post here I was hoping to get a few issues cleared up if possible.
This pertains mostly to UT2003 & UTGOTY, I'm trying to arrange some grudge-matches for members on a (war)gaming forum I frequent, we've only got one UT2k4 player so it's '99 & 2K3 only atm..
I'm quite new myself (ok, I suck
), I've only played relatively few games online so I'm very sorry if much of this seems simple or self-evident..
*) Anyway, firstly, the way the servers work - If I open UT's (whatever version) server browser, & pick a relatively quiet server, check the maps & mods played & then bookmark it, will it likley have the same Ping next time I return?
How likley that they'll run the same mods, mutators, etc?
Basically I'll need to scout out a few servers for us to play on, & it would be nice to be able to say beforehand "oh yah, this server's good, they tend to play team DM, use these mods", etc..
Do the servers rotate their mutators very regularly, & if so that'll mean everyone has to spend ages at the start downloading the mutators in question, right?
*) Secondly, about mutators & maps;
I recently reinstalled UT2003, I had loads of mutators, mods & maps saved & installed.
Now, last night I played a DM using the Fyrian mutator (weapon replacer). I used to have the Fyrian mut installed, & used it a few times offline against bots, but I hadn't reinstalled it along with UT by this time.
So, last night I'm playing, & before the match starts I had to spend 5 mins downloading the Fyrian mutator in order to play along, but when I played an offline instant action game vs bots later, the Fyrian mutator wasn't availible like it was when I used to have it installed..
Also, I had to download the Legoland map (again, I used to have this, it's still .zipped up and saved on disk, but not reinstalled yet), but after the match I couldn't go & play it in instant action.
It seems that if I d/l a map or mut from the server it only stays on my comp as long as the game's running.
Is there a vast difference between downloading a mut/map on the server, & saving & installing it from a map-site; and if so why is this please?
Will I have to download at the start it again if I wish to play on the same server again, and will I have to get everyone to d/l as many muts as possible beforehand & installing them to try & prevent this kind of thing happening in future? (or is that what the Cache folder for?)
I'm aware of the bonus packs, I have them all installed (I think) already..
Do all the bonus packs leave a trace? This is the first few lines of my Manifest.ini file:
[Setup]
MasterProduct=UT2003
Group=UT2003
Group=WH40k
Group=DEBonus
I've got the CBP & Epic Bonus packs .zipped, when installed will these leave a similar line in the file?
*) Third, about models & skins. Does the server you're playing on have to have your mesh installed in order to run it?
I've seen a lot of players online using the stock models from UT(goty and 2k3), even though I appear on my own computer using my own model (the 40K SM), will other players be able to recognise me, and me them, or will we all revert to a default mesh?
I'm aware that they'll all need the same mesh/skin installed in their own UT folder, but does the server we're on need it too?
This'll be important for team games, so if the server does need to have each mesh used by the players, is there any way to find out beforehand which meshes the server does support?
*) I assume that any servers I do bookmark will appear in my C:\UT\Web folder, right? So I can basially open the file in notepad, copy the IP & email/PM it to another person?
Or even just email the favourites files so the other players can deposit them in thier own Web folder(s)?
This should make arranging a particular server for them to play on much easier, since the other players won't have to scroll down a long list & search for the names of the others in order to get onto the right one they can just click on the bookmark that now appears, is that right?
*) Lastly (cheers if you've read this far!
), will most server admins get peeved off if me & 5 or 6 others rock up to their server unnanounced & all start playing one another at the same time?
I know it's a public server, so most things should go, but would it be a good idea to email them a few days in advance just to say that we're planing to descend on their server?
Thanks very much if you can answer any or all of these, or any other advice you could give me would be much appreciated. I know that organising gamers is like tryng to herd cats, but with luck I'm going to give it a bash..
Cheers!
