How to use the Redeemer in CTF?

It's happened to me several times lately: I kill someone with the Redeemer or I accidentally run into it and now I have it. So now what? Give it to someone else on my team (since I'm not the best)? Wait until my team's taken the flag and hit their base? Wait until my flag's taken and hit the carrier?

(Unfortunately, if I wait too long I either have to hide or get killed myself.)

What's the strategy for using it, and what is the protocol if I don't feel I'm best suited to use it?

Well, you can wait till your flag buddy takes the enemy's flag, and then shoot off anone following him with the rocket. The shock wave can also boost your buddy.
Or, you can go as a escort with your pal and fire it at any defenders near the flag.

the best use of reedemer i've ever seen in CTF was on bridge of fate. a guy turned invisible, and walked right through the door, and it took about 5 seconds for us to realize that there was an invisible person in the room, and he was followed by a reedemer, which killed us all, and he took the flag. Generally, the reedemer is good for clearing out large groups of defenders or chasers, it should never be used by the flag carrier, since it usually ends up with him killing himself, also, you dont want to do it until your a little ways away from the flag, otherwise they will spawn back in your way

I just accidentally broke up a gorgeous play like this. I was off on the rocket side at the far intersection where I could see down the long rocket side hall and also through the doorway that leads to the center hall and then the flak side -- a strategic location, I think. I saw a guy run past the doorway in the central hall, towards the main doors, and fired a shock primary. Lo and behold someone had perfectly timed a redeemer so that it would follow him in just above head height and clear the room for him. (I guess he'd draw fire and maybe let the redeemer get in unscathed.)

My primary missed him and hit the redeemer. Denied! And he waltzed through the doors alone. Heh, heh. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

(OT: I also saw someone jump up to the very high catwalk on the long side hallway. I didn't know you could get up there. I have gotten way up high in the central cavern, but never thought about the hallways. I saw someone tele up there and started trying to shock them and somehow they jumped down behind me and accidentally switched to a redeemer and fired it at me -- in the direction away from our base. It missed and one of my teammates-- no, not carrying the flag -- stepped through the door from the direction of the main cavern just in time to get nuked.)

I guess I'm just feeling incompetent

I'm playing on public servers, where I tend to not have established buddies. Since I'm not uber-player -- though I was this afternoon but not this evening -- I'm thinking I'd love to hand it off to someone who feels like they're an uber-player or maybe two or three buddies who are attacking the flag together.

But the reactions I've gotten to a "I have the redeemer, who wants it?" have been, shall we say, not positively reinforcing.

Part of this is that people on public servers tend not to organize attacks unless they are buddies who play regularly together. The best you often get is, "I'm on offense" or "I'm running down the middle, need some help".

(OT: Speaking of coordination, occasionally I'll see an opponent waiting in a corner, hand to ear. I imagine they're typing something like, "I'm waiting in the main hall. Run down the middle and I'll cover you." Or at least they're typing as much of that as they can before my flak shell separates their head from their hand. I have to admit that I get a perverse pleasure from that.)

            point-shoot-laugh

but make sure its worth it and you are not in the blast radius, or any teammates are in the blast radius (for Friendlyfire=true servers)
