Why can't I kill people

I'm getting my **** wooped online but I can't figure out why?

No its not because I **** before you say it.

It takes me five hits to kill someone and they do it in one, oh and why are people being spawned with shields, how do you do that?

Do you have to complete the game to get a stronger better character or something, I've only just started mine?

Depressingly enough I think it has something to do with practice .

That and knowing the maps. Most good players know where the power ups are and get them so grab the shields and the health vials etc if you're amped up you can take four or five hits and still be around to frag the opposition. When you join if you haven't spawned use the opportunity to look around and figure out where the weapons and powerups are and grab them. Also play on instant action on the maps and get familiar.

I'm speaking as a relative noob who gets his *** kicked online on a regular basis. If you get hit with a headshot you're dead no matter which way it goes, three rockets will do it as well.

A mate of mine pointed out that he used to practice on gael against bots on godlike to get to the point where it was straightforward against other people...and he's pretty **** good. I'm just working on putting the hours in at the mo.

Its true, the only way to be any good at all is to practice. There are no real secrets or tricks once you know the basics. Its a learning curve and you'll just have to deal with being **** for a while. Its worth putting the effort in though, trust me.

"People being spawned with shields" is probably just the spawn protection that most servers have switched on. For a few seconds afer you spawn you are shielded, just enough time to get your bearings (and get out of the way of spawn campers), then your able to be hit again. Alternatively, if you mean the shield gun then you will automatically have it along with the assault rifle when you spawn.

There are no "better" characters. The characters have no attributes as far as I know, its just a skin. (Some may have small advantages as far as the colourings and stuff being less visible in some maps etc.)

How is your ping? you'll be disadvantaged if you are on dial up or have really high ping compared to everyone else. I'm not really technical so other people will be able to help you if thats your problem.

The charactaers can have different attributes, but that's only if the SpeciesStats mutator is turned on, and I have yet to come across a server using it.

But yes, the secret is practice. I've been told that to be a good player, you don't go hunting for enemies. Instead you go hunting for powerups and frag people along the way.

Yep it all comes down to experience, practice, practice, some practice, a bit of practising when you can, a good practice session on a regular basis, more practice, practice.... and ov course not forgetting - good old fashioned practice :up:

If u getting pwned a bit too much for your liking online, like others have said learn some skills offline where u can go at your own pace. I went thru the whole single player scenario about four times on increasing difficulty each time - which helped me out loads and gave me a bit more confidence to play online.

Dont be disheartened by getting whupped online though - its only a game after all its meant to be fun!!

And dont forget - even 1337 players still get thier *** kicked all over the map occasionally - some people you will meet online have been playing this game since 1998!!!!1¼™

learn to time the power ups...............your probably hitting them but they r so full of health and shield they take you out faster

Other people could have sheild, or just picked up big keg o' health, plus weapons have different damage rates.

stop using rockets flak mini etc

good players will kill you in 0.7 second with a lightning shot follwed by a shock primary shot.

To add to what Warboss said:

Learn what weapons are best for which situation. (ie: Lightning / Sniper @ distance, Flak / RL @ close range)

Do NOT use your scroller to select weapons - it's too slow. Bind your weapons to keys around your movement keys. (eg: I use WASD for movement: R is RL, F is Link, V is Mini - Shock and Flak are on my mouse)

Lastly, act rather than react where possible. You enter a large area - switch to a distance weapon. When you go down a corridor, change to Flak or RL.

Generally now I will move around with a distance weapon until something makes me change.

tips

here some tips for 1 hti kos, assuming there on 100 hp and no armor

2 rockets direct hit. charged up, i count it as one shot
1 flak cannon altfire direct hit
1 head shot sniepr rifle
1 head shot lightning gun
1 charged up bio gun direct hit
1 charged up shield gun at point blank
1 translocator teleport at their feet
1 shock combo

and of course your usual redeemer, ion painter, target painter pwnage

everyone spawns with like 2 seconds of invulnerability, which is the shield you see. as in requiring more hits to take people down, are you using flak at long distance or something?

and they may just have more health

Play some single player, and jump ALOT.

I have played alot in the few monthes ive had this game. I sucked but could beat experianced bots within the first 2 days. I go onto one of my favorite servers and there are a few good players on it. I constantly died because of them. But i recently found out how to wall dodge and with a sheild gun of all things i can take out at least 3 of these good players before one of there double damaged rockets hit me. Just practice and youll get better.

lol, I think the 'starting with shields' thing you're talking about it the Spawn Protection some servers turn on. It's so you don't get blasted before you can see what's happening.
