creating/selecting a Profile?

the game should autosave your data. in the past all i've ever had to do was create my own profile and play. after i wanted to quit, unreal saves your status, as is, until the next time you want to play again.

When I try to play Single Player, it takes me to a screen to select a profile. It shows "no proflies", and I click "create new" and pick a name, skin, etc. But then what??? How do you Save the profile? Enter doesn't seem to do it, and Escape takes you back to the home screen and appears to lose the profile. I assume a profile is necessary to play thru the tournament ladder, right? Without a profile selected I can only do the Tutorials. HELP!!!
