Can't help you much with experience / playing but I can give you a tip ..

Hitscan weapons like shox and LG don't like being aimed. They like being held still while you strafe about to get the x-hair on your opponent.

Well actually, just move to get closer, and aim to get the xhair on your opponents head. Aim for the body though. Use Rockets in close combat, or flak, dont use rockets in VERY close combat, use flak primary, not alt, use shock alt when your at clsoe combat, use shock pri when your a long way away.
