    UDK Forums Moving to forums.unrealengine.com

    Hey fellow developers!

You may have noticed a few changes to the Epic Games website over the past few weeks and you can expect more to come in the future. As Unreal Engine evolves, we are wanting to sunset the UDK forums here on forums.epicgames.com and bring the entire Unreal Engine community together at forums.unrealengine.com, where the UE4 forums reside.

As you know, Unreal Engine 4 was made free for everyone earlier this year, however, we wanted to make sure that any active discussions for those developing in UDK can continue, as we know there are a number you that remain passionate about the toolset.

What does this mean for you?
If you have not already, you will need to create a free account at unrealengine.com, as the epicgames.com accounts are not linked. This will get you access to the forums, UE4 AnswerHub, UE4 wiki and the Epic Games Launcher. A large number of you have accounts on the new site, so no action is required on your end.

But what will happen to these threads?
Do not worry! All of the existing threads here will be archived for future viewing, though we will not be taking up any new discussions for UDK here.

So when is this going to happen?
We plan on turning the UDK forums off at the end of 2015. This should allow you enough time to wrap any conversation and move new discussions over to the new forums.

    But what about my badges?
We will be transferring all user rank / badge information over as appropriate. It may take some time to match everything up, but it is something we know we need to approach

Where do we post new threads for UDK?
There are three new forums available at forums.unrealengine.com. These will be the sections for UDK discussion:

While you are there, feel free to dive in with any UE4 related questions in the other sections provided. The community is rather supportive and ready to chat with you all.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask! We will be moving important stickies over, but if you have any special requests, let me know.

    Thanks everyone, and happy development!

By saying "we will not be taking up any new discussions for UDK here" do you mean that the udk forum will continue to exist but posting new threads will be disabled? No loging in to my account here to see private messages?Do we have to move our work in progress threads/create them again?

Chance,i know you people at Epic want to have all of your users at one place and i appreciate that you have thought of us but this sounds dangerous. With so much info i know something is bound to happen when moving this.Do not worry.People from here do like the UE4 and will move to it but the only reason we havent is because we have games developed at a place that is too advanced. We cant just port the projects to UE4.And without the old threads most of us feel lost.Hell ,even now i can google some udk problem, enter a topic from lets say 2012,post and somebody will come to help.

On the other hand i like the idea about the udk+ue4 as more users will see our projects(some of which will even surprise Epic)but this sounds like a surgery in a open environment.

If you guys havent made the final preparations lets talk a litle and see what can be moved and what is best to be left alone so that we evoid possible problems that will make work for us harder.

      Cheers

By saying "we will not be taking up any new discussions for UDK here" do you mean that the udk forum will continue to exist but posting new threads will be disabled?
For a bit, yes. We will be archiving the threads for reference / the ability to search, of course by the time we remove access to the forums all together.
No loging in to my account here to see private messages?
We will have better dates on when access to these forums will be removed entirely, though I would suggest backing up your PMs and taking conversations up on the new forums as soon as you can, as we will be beginning the shutdown at the end of the year. I am not sure yet on how long accounts will have access to log in, but I'll let you know as soon as we have a date in place. In the worst case, this will also happen at the end of 2015.
Do we have to move our work in progress threads/create them again?
You will need to recreate them on the new forums, as they are two completely separate instances, and there is no simple way migrate existing threads with images and such.
Chance,i know you people at Epic want to have all of your users at one place and i appreciate that you have thought of us but this sounds dangerous. With so much info i know something is bound to happen when moving this.
It won't be moving, but archiving. The data should stay as is, just accessible in a different way. Little risk exists in this case as nothing is transferring outside of copy/pasted text
People from here do like the UE4 and will move to it but the only reason we havent is because we have games developed at a place that is too advanced. We cant just port the projects to UE4.And without the old threads most of us feel lost. Hell ,even now i can google some udk problem, enter a topic from lets say 2012,post and somebody will come to help.
This is precisely the reason why we're keeping a place for the UDK forums around We want to make sure the UDK community still has access to data and visibility to others.
On the other hand i like the idea about the udk+ue4 as more users will see our projects(some of which will even surprise Epic)but this sounds like a surgery in a open environment.
Totally! You'll get visibility from the UE4 community, as well as get to see what others are making with the new toolkit. As far as it being open surgery, we're not introducing any technical risks by transferring the forums, which is why we're asking you to move discussions and not just moving threads.

If you guys havent made the final preparations lets talk a litle and see what can be moved and what is best to be left alone so that we evoid possible problems that will make work for us harder.
The only thing Epic will be moving is stickies, and it's more copy/paste of text in most scenarios. These discussions will be in searchable, linkable archive. We're just asking that new discussions take place in the new environment. It shouldn't be any more work on anyone's end, just a different place to chat and share.

Hope that clears it up a bit!

Thanks for the well explained info.Since you say that we will not lose the years of information i beleve you.
Does this means that the ut3 forums, gears, infinity etc will do the same thing or are they staying untouched?(probably use my current nick in them to log in)

Speaking of niks, for the other forum shoud i use my unreal engine 4 account or the majic12 will be moved there too?

And a small favour.Im currently using internet explorer 9.I know is a litle old but it works perfect with the unreal engine 4 forums. The only problem i have is that if i want to sign in im presented with a blank gray screen and the only way to log in is to use more current browser. In the begining it wasnt like that.If possible please ask a tech guy if there is something blocking the log in+password not showing when i press the log in button using ie9.(ore is it a java thing as i have it disabled)
          Thanks

            @Chance / Epic

            Confirmation of IE9 login bug!

Just letting you guys know so you don't think this is an isolated incident.
Also, since downloading UE4 requires a sign-in, it makes sense to fix this....

HTML / Script source underlying <blank> IE9 login page:

I don't see why this forums can't keep existing, " i've read the cannot continue discussions thing but it still exists", but still.... why semi-destroy something you built ? barely anybody will use the forums on the other forums. Can the reason be known why you are blowing this up ?

This is good news in my opinion. Since you're talking about archiving the content from this forum, my only concern is covered (as there's a lot of good information on this forum that doesn't need to be lost).
I've been a little worried about the slowing activity here and the amount of posts that seemed like spam that have been appearing recently.

I don't know about the gears/infinity stuff but there are sections for the old UT games on the new UT forums.

just a guess but maybe part of it is that a lot of the old UE3/UDK pros are on the new forum and they could help with peoples issues, also the UE4 forum is quite active where as this seems like a ghost town these days so people might get more help, as I said its just a guess.

ps. its been a while since I've posted on this forum but it seems kind of glitchy, is it glitchy for anyone else or is it just the terrible old laptop I'm on right now?

ah, I figured it might be something like that, I mean I have visited since then and there were a few issues but today it seems really bad like when I clicked on the "edit post" button and it refreshed the thread instead, anyway thanks for clearing it up

Search System.... [Finding info relevant to UDK vs. UE4 only]

                        Question:
In time, will the entire past UDK archive (forums.epicgames.com) be moved to UE4 (forums.unrealengine.com)....?

If so, can Epic ensure that the search system Filters STRICTLY by UDK vs. UE4?

if you're trying to resolve a specific UDK problem you don't want to be hit with threads that are only relevant to UE4. Please let this be a key factor in choosing whether or not to host the UDK-archive as a separate site! Because while you can limit searches by thread, you can only save one overall search preference, and often you need several.

                        ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Example-1:
There's a lot of noise on the new forums. It can be hard to locate threads even just a week or two old, especially because of limitations like this:

                        HTML Code:
The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search:

                        https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hollowtree/shape-of-the-world
We need searching by quoted strings or pattern-matched text searches. Right now you can't find projects reliably. ...Try looking up a kickstarter link or any URL etc!!

                        ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Example-2:

Goal: Find threads titled Universe, but ignore University or Universal etc....

So search for Universe but eliminate all posts with University and Universal or similar or related words..

Problem: Even if you choose 'Search Titles Only', the system buries you in irrelevant posts.

'Exact name' only applies to usernames, so there needs to be an 'Exact Keywords' option!

Adding a plus+ before a word or a minus- or using quotes around a phrase doesn't work either, and those would be useful.

If you opt for Google things are better, but you then lose crucial filters such as date / by-title / number-of-replies etc.

                        HTML Code:
                        Google:

                        site:forums.unrealengine.com +universe -university -universal +threads

That is not the plan, no, specifically for the reasons you mentioned

For the new forums, you can search in the specific sub-forums to avoid getting UE4 related results in the results.

I'll look into your issues with search in general and see what we can do as well.

                          Hope that helps!

A quick update - The current plan of action is to remove the ability to post here in the UDK forums in the first week of January (to take the holiday into consideration). Forum PMs and account access should still be available at that time (as of right now) and we'll have more information on that side of things in the coming weeks.

                            I'll keep everyone updated
