So, basicly, you have the whole udn. But I advice you to watch all 3dBuzz tutorials on this site http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/VideoTutorials.html it's at teh apragraph "3D Buzz Video Tutorials - Using UDK" it got me started with all editors involved into the udk in two days.

If you're starting from scratch I would just spend several days playing with the editor, throwing meshes into a map, adding lights, playing with the various tools such as cascade. Get to know the basics while having fun. If you get stuck, or feel like digging deeper then search the UDN documentation. But, don't get too hung up on any issues. Just try something else.

Key here is to familiarise yourself with as many different things as possible without getting stuck - its easy to lose enthusiasm if something is holding you back. For this reason I wouldn't rush into using Blender meshes either as the workflow for getting them into the engine can be a pain at first.

After awhile things will start to click and you can get more serious.

Yeah, that was the other problem I had. Everything is so **** expensive

You can also create them in 3d max, maya, cinema 4d (all over 3000 $),... but blender is free and really good

Yes, you need other programms to create a whole game.

Choose one of these points in any order you like.

-start with 3d modelling, so that you can create your own models and animations for weapons, characters, foilage,... a good 3d program is blender
-try to setup materials for your models in UDK http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/MaterialExamples.html
-after you have created the materials and models, I would start with creating the map -> landscape mode, lighting, kismet... http://www.worldofleveldesign.com/
-now you can start with programming. Take a look at the scripts that are included in UDK or download some weapons scripts and try to modify them ( some weapon tutorials: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_N6NwVX__k )

This is just a rough overview.

    I started like that:

I just played around with the editor, watched tutorials, tried to achieve special stuff (e.g custom weapon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuJvTaGugxE) participated in beginner teams, helped other people with my knowledge. So I mixed everything up

Thanks, I'll definitely check out your tutorials! Honestly, I want to get started with the basics of everything. And eventually make a 1st person game.

    Where to get started..?

    Hey guys,
I'm new to the forums, and to UDK as well. I've been trying to get into 3D game development (with UDK) but don't know where to start. I've tried looking for tutorials to learn the engine, but either I'm not looking good enough or there aren't that many good tutorials on it out there. I have no previous experience with and 3D game development, however, I've worked with GameMaker before and know some of the basics of that. I want to learn how to use UDK but don't know where to start. Can someone help me or give me any suggestions please?
Working...
