UE4 will use Lightmass for its lighting system!

    Alan Willard:

SVOGI (Sparse Voxel Octree Global Illumination) was our prototype GI system that we used for Elemental last year. And our targets, given that we've had announced hardware from Sony, that's where we're going to be using Lightmass as our global illumination solution instead of SVOGI

Honestly, I am really disappointed. I can't believe that we're going to shift to the future-gen, and we're still going to use the primitive lightmap baking for another 10+ years. It makes me wonder why every other engine have their own optimized dynamic GI solution and Epic still CAN'T come up with one.

    This is unacceptable.

And..there goes all my hopes for proper dynamic lighting

    bad move epic games ):

So that means instead of having full dynamic lighting like cryengine we are going to have to do the same damm annoying lightmass baking again?

if so then epic games is surely lacking sane people

Exactly. Lightmass for another decade, yay!

        what the

i dont even understand how epic games tough it would be an good move , i was certainly hoping we would get rid of the annoying lightmap baking in in UE3 and we would move full dynamic in UE4 Like they showed in their older demos

thats just wrong and stupid honestly..

Looks like UE4 wont be my engine then if they keep pulling annoying stuff like this

wich is funny becouse every other "modern" engine has full dynamic lighting alredy...

That page was more about ue4 on the ps4
It also says its being improved so it may run in the background like http://forums.epicgames.com/threads/...t-reaching-UDK

Still why cant epic games just add an proper dynamic lighting model since every other engine has done it alredy?

heck.. they were even prototyping it!

              @Zeqzy:

It's an embarrassment to talk about lightmap baking (whether in the background or not) regardless of whatever improvements in this time where dynamic GI has become 'common' in current-gen, now let alone future-gen. There is no excuse for this failure.

It sounds to me more like the engine is going to use lightmass for PS4 only.

Jacky, assuming you are right, it still sounds like a joke to use ligtmaps baking for PS4.

Its about the engine being able to run on high and low powered systems http://venturebeat.com/2013/03/29/ep...-popping-demo/
E.g if you check basesystemsetings.ini in udk platforms like flash and android have everything disabled

well from my point of view as long we get SVOGI at least for PC i can deal with that

I honestly do hope the same. At least they could utilize it for lighting preview purposes. At least whoever works on lighting, can instantly get the results, and only when its finalized, bake once.

well thats disappointing, i thoguht the next gen consoles were meant to be super awesome, looks like all that **** about using standard PC parts and some fancy ram in the ps4 was dribble afterall

Still, Lightmass is wonderful compared with lighting in some other engines. (I'm thinking about the horrible lighting in Unity)

The article clearly says that the lightmass baked lighting is for the PS4 version of the engine. The Voxel lighting for UE4 on PC is still there, so in a way I am glad they didn't dumb it down to run on the PS4 and just disabled it there.
