Music Copyright Question

After googling for a while I couldn't find a real answer so I figured I'd ask here. When it comes to music that's in the public domain such as Mozart, etc... Can you use it in your game free of copyright problems if it was played/recorded by somebody else?

Or do you have to actually record the music yourself in order to use it free of charge?

My gut tells me you have to record it yourself but I'm really not sure on this one since the copyright on the actual music has long since expired and thought I'd ask.

The recording will be copyrighted by the performers, and thus not in the public domain (unless the recording itself is very old).
