Create a new layer (in your channels not in layers) name it "Alpha 1" and just copy paste your pic into it.

Here's a little round-about way, hope it helps:

        1. Ctrl+A on your image, then Ctrl+C
        2. Go to Channels, as Miatribe has mentioned, and create a new channel
        3. Ctrl+V to paste your image onto the channel
        4. Hold on to Ctrl and click on your new channel, this will make a selection based on the White pixels present in the channel
        5. With the selection active, go back to your mask and fill it with white ( assuming your mask is completely black to begin with ).
