    FreeSpace ?

Does anyone know if the Freespace IP still licensed by anyone I searched it and it seems that the creator Volition says they sold it to Interplay and Interplay claims they dont own it.So does anyone know if it the IP is owned by anyone or it dead IP like many 90s PC games?

lol can someone who knows what a "IP" is look into this because i cant find a correct answer.I emailed the creating studio and waiting for a response but probably wont get a answer since the issue was never answered when it was brought up around 2000.

Given that there is about fifty different acronyms using IP, several of which I can easily apply and have it make sense with the context of what you're asking, it could mean a lot of things, and many of them could be applicable. At first I would assume you mean internet protocol, which it probably is not if no one is claiming to own it, and it's doubtful given that the game is ten years old. At least Freespace 2 is. But hey, you get props for obviously not wanting to help people get the information you want.

I think it is pretty obvious which meaning of IP is relevant in this case. People don't own internet protocols so definitely not that one. :P To spell it out: Intellectual Property.

You would probably do better asking on Freespace community sites, it is unlikely anyone here knows more than you since you have been actively researching it. All the information I can see is that Interplay own it.

I assumed he wanted something about servers. I don't get why he would add that when he could just ask who owns the rights to the game. Which makes a lot more sense. The publisher owns it.

@walnut if actually read my first post THE PUBLISHER SOLD THE IP to interplay now as the community and employee's of interplay say they dont own it so im tryna see if the rights are under a GPL of some sort(@walnut that mean general public license) now since they released the source code almost a decade ago

Interplay were Volition's original publisher and owned the rights to the IP (as was common in the day). Volition were acquired by THQ while Interplay retained the IP. Then Interplay shutdown and were selling off their IP. If they say they no longer have it, then I guess someone somewhere has bought it.

They must own it, they recently re-registered the trademark for the Descent name.

                  Edit:

Interplay DO own it. Very clearly.

Interplay never gave up ownership. Volition simply sold their publishing rights for the series back to Interplay when they were purchased by THQ.
