    It's entirely genre dependant.

      Usually it's between 5 and 60 hours (first run-through).

Of course is genre dependant but you have to admit you are a bit disapointed to have a 8 hours mission of example in call of duty. So yeah internet dm change a lot but if you are not nto online gaming like myself you expect a game to stand 10 hours at least and 30 hours isn't that common today.

For non multi player player games you do run the risk of making it too short or too long. the 10-30 hour range seems good. If you want your game to be over 30 hours it may be better to release 2 games.

              FPS 4-10
RPG depends, can be a lot
RTS mostly 6 or so, unless it has more than just campaign

Good and recent gameplay examples are Dragons Age for RPG = 40-50 hours and Borderlands = 10-12 hours of happy shooting without rush.

It depends on the genre of game, but usually I'd say ten hours or so of solid gameplay makes for a good AAA title. The standards are going down, however; as games get more and more realistic and more and more complicated, playtime decreases. At least, it's trending that way.

                  Then again, a 60-hour RPG is good; a 60-hour FPS would be...exhausting.

Well if you play multiplayer it can be near infinite, but for SP an fps is around 5-10 hours.

It's about condensing, games like Call of Duty are so fast-paced, intense and insane it's like 100 hours condensed to around 10. Never a dull moment. Where with a game like Dragon Age things are slower moving and you can easily pass an hour not even moving the story forward, but just doing inventory management, gearing up, etc.

                        4!!?

... Was running through Quake 2 again recently and remembered how nice it was to have an SP game that actually lasted several play sessions. SP parts of FPSes just keep getting shorter.

Then there're games like Doom and Quake and Duke and Unreal that were frantic gameplay all the time and still lasted a good long while. But I suppose they don't have time to make a long, interesting game anymore when it takes 6 textures to make a material for one wall...

Can't say I remember how long it took to run through those games, but I don't remember them as particularly long.

Doom has many levels that's run through in 2 minutes.
