    Multiplayer UDK Project Can't Connect to Hosted Game

    Wise ones,

    As a noob to UDK, I am attempting to get a multiplayer test working from UDK 2013-07. The game I have works fine if I package it and distribute the package to other players. When people load the packaged game, they can browse to my hosted game and join it fine.

    When I send the source files to another buddy running UDK and he runs the game from the launcher or however, he cannot join my game. It shows the server in the server browser, but when he clicks on the hosted game nothing happens. After a lot of internet searching, we have tried synchronizing our UnSetup.Game.xml in the UDK-2013-07/binaries directory, but that doesn't seem to completely fix the problem. We were getting a "server running the wrong game type" error before tweaking the values in that UnSetup.Game.xml file, but we made those go away.

    Now we get the following in the log of a client machine trying to connect running the game in the launcher (the below log output shows two attempts with many clicks on the server):

    Can anyone please help us out with the steps necessary to run the game multiplayer from the UDK without having to package it every time? Packaging it and redeploying it every time is really time consuming for troubleshooting issues!

    The problem here is your friends *.U files is not the same as yours. Do one thing. Go to your UDK-2013-07\UDKGame\Script\ folder and select all files and send them to your friends and tell them to copy at the same location (Make sure all of you are using the same UDK version). Now try to reconnect.

      Thanks for that suggestion. Actually, we did that and more, we finally tried moving the entire UDKGame directory to his machine from mine, it did not affect the error at all...

        does he have the right ports open on his rooter?
        are you using steam sockets, does he have steam open and logged in?

          If you want to use steam for hosting, the client needs to have a proper steam_appid.txt, which you do not seem to have there:

          If you want to go without Steam, you should run with -nosteam on the commandline, or set bEnableSteam=false in *Engine.ini.

            Ok, we'll try that steam thing. Also, we were on the same network, no router in between our computers, no windows firewalls, and again, the clients did work together if we packaged it and sent a packaged version of the game to the other computer. Therefore, I would really think it wasn't a network/port thing...
