Speedtree issue

Speedtree isn't working for me (Feb 2012 UDK build), the compiler runs but the modeler freezes on startup. Is everybody having this issue? or is it only me? does anybody know a fix? Much appreciated!

pc specs:
cpu: core i7 2600 @ 3.4ghz
gpu: amd/ati radeon hd5970
ram: 16gb corsair xms3 ddr3
primary drive: corsair 60gb ssd (udk and OS is installed on this)
secondary drive: 1tb western digital @7200rpm
OS: windows 7 64 bit ultimate

I am having the exact same issue, but mine is with the January UDK build. A fix suggestion would be greatly appreciated. I would even be willing to use an older build if it allows me to use speedtree (but of course I would prefer to stay with current builds).
