    Material LOD's?

    I'm using a material for large rocks in my map. They looks great from a distance, but up close the texture looks quite blurred and nasty.

    Is it possible to fade in a mask to overlay on top of the blurred texture with some finer detail?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    of course it's possible. you can use a texture with more tiling and multiply/add/etc to the main thing
    usually a noise map is enough but it can come in many flavors. [here] is a very good article explores this concept in depth. the one thing it doesn't mention is the big difference it can make if you also apply a detail texture into the specularity of the material

    in general you can do this all the time, I haven't yet found out if using extra instructions to fade something out in the distance really pays off performance-wise
