  • Problems about destruction of fractured meshs with vehicles or rockets

    Hi all!

Some years ago, I worked with UE2, creating some fun maps for Unreal Tournament 2004. Now, I would like to do the same with UE3.
But, a little problem appeared with the fractured meshes. So I just came to sign up here to expose you my problems.

I have created a fractured mesh for test the physics destructions with UE3. Everything is working fine with the Link Gun, I can destruct it as I want. But if i want to pass through it with a Scorpion or to shoot it with a Rocket Launcher, this isn't working, and I don't know really why.
I have done a lot of researches about this problem, and I'm not the only one blocked with this.

I found a video who exactly explain what I said:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQluY_DFN1k

Sure, I can use PhysX with the APEX plugin for UE3, but I don't want to use it, because a lot of people haven't got Nvidia cards, so they gonna lag if they play the maps I want to create.

How can I fix this issue?
I hope my english is right.

    Thanks in advance!!

You can use it freely, cause Fractured Mesh and all rigid body physics in UE3 is based on same PhysX engine.
(PhysX SDK - multiplatform physics engine and PhysX - Nvidia exclusive extra effects in games are not the same thing).

      Really? Great!!

I'm gonna try it now, thanks for the advice!

EDIT: I can't find the "Create new Physx Destructible" in the right-click menu of the Content Browser. Maybe 'cause I need APEX PhysX Lab software?

Yeah, it was removed when APEX was added, since Destruction module is an evolution of PhysX Destructibles.

You need PhysXLab to create assets now, and here are some tutorials

          Okay, thanks you very much!!
I'm gonna create a new account and download it.
I hope that I will not have latency during game sessions due to the fact I haven't got a Nvidia card, I stay sceptic.

PhysX Destructibles are great and just what it seems you need.
but beware it eats framerate like its going out of fashion, specially with a non nvidia card.
dont have too much of it in 1 place and dont break it up into too many small bits.

Okay, thanks for the advices Tegleg!
But is there another possibilities to create a destructible environement?
I've seen a lot of maps (like theses: http://forums.epicgames.com/threads/...sics-finalists ) where the destructions seems to be created with another thing that PhysX.

Do you know how these destructions are created?
              Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Wow, APEX is working really fine! No latency at all with my ATI HD5870 Mobile, great! I just can't smash an object with a vehicule, but i'm gonna look for this on internet.
              Thanks!!

                It is possible
                http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VERNQye9low

To improve performance, don't forget to set LOD budget (which will limit number of rigid bodies in scene)
                http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/APEXOverview.html

Another feature, not described in docs, is collision filtering for APEX
                http://forums.developer.nvidia.com/d...-is-broken-off
So you can make your destructible chunks interact with your vehicle, but not with your character, and stuff like that.

It's working really really fine, the destructions are really realistic!
I just come to create a GIANT block. I spawned on it, and I broken it. I thought I was on a earthquake, that's impressive.
                  Thanks you very much!!
