    2d character

I'm creating a 2d character (or rather, a 3d character with very little depth) that exists in a 3d world. I'm creating it in Maya, however, I don't want to extrude it's features, but rather draw the features onto the basic outline with a paint like fashion. How would I do this?

By depth do you mean a verry thin character(thin as a polygon plane)Something like the characters from south park?

What do you mean by "draw the features onto the basic outline"? Could you rephrase that? I'm afraid it is nonsense as far as I can tell.

Texturing a flat character would be the same as a regular character, what's the issue exactly?

Why not use a plane with alpha?
