    Clothes on a character

When modeling a character clothes, is it common practice to model the clothes as separate objects of the same mesh (no shared vertices between the character and the clothes)? Also when doing the retopo to get to a low poly model, should I apply the same concept, one mesh, separate objects (shirt, pants, etc.)? Once the low poly is built, bake out the normal maps.

Just looking for a bit guidance. Thanks.

It depends on whether or not you are going to change the character's clothes. If he/she will not change costumes, then I think it would be easiest to retopo the clothes as part of the body. If an accessory or something overlaps the clothes, you could possibly attach it to a socket; especially if there are flaps hanging away from the body. It really depends on what you're aiming for.

But if you are planning on changing clothing pieces, it might be a good idea to make them separate objects. I'm no expert though, just trying to help.
