is there a way to use the landscape paint tool like the old terrain brush, so that heigth is increasing or decreasing while keeping the mouse pressed?

I dont know what you mean, but you can increase decrease the height of your landscape with the landscape tool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCH1Ciy05_A -
in terrain tool you can change the height over time by holding mouse pressed. with the paint tool you must click several times or move the mouse cursor to change the height of one place.
