Banding on Landscape Shading

My Landscape was looking nice earlier, but now that I've actually put a material on it, the shading has turned into a set of venetian blinds.



It changes to tighter bands when I get closer, but in either case I still see visible banding instead of the smooth shading it is supposed to be.

What am I doing wrong?

What you're seeing is UDK's beautiful dynamic shading. Build your lighting and the problem will go away.

Grrrrr, the only thing that I've done is apply the material to the landscape; the lighting shouldn't be invalidated for that!

It should; materials influence how light is reflected or refracted. Therefor lighting needs to be rebuild whenever a material change is made.
Some materials might not even accept shadows or use custom lighting.
