problem importing a greyscale texture, help needed

sorry for posting it again but i think i put it the first time in the wrong section, hope here i can get an answer.

hello i'm trying to make a particle system based on the alternate linkgun fire, i'm making my textures to override the textures from the material from it, but i'm trying to import a greyscale texture, liked the one that came with the alternate fire of the linkun material but didn't work, always "import failed".

then i tried to import the texture in another format (rgb) using tga, psd, bmp the result is that the transparent part of the picture is white in the udk, and if i used png, the texture is converted from a circle to a rectangle.

my texture is 256x256 and tried already in rgb and 8bits greyscale, the last one will result in import failed.

and here is a picture for the correct texture (the one that cames with udk 256x256 8bit greyscale)

and here is mine, you can see how wrong is in the content browser, that picture is when i imported in png format 256x256 in rgb

any idea on how can i import a 8bit grayscale texture that has a transparent area ? or can i convert the texture to a greyscale after i import it into the content browser ?

thanks in advance for all the help.

Ok well first it definitely MUST be RGB, UDK doesn't handle anything else. I'm guessing you've tried copy and pasting your texture into a new RGB 256x256 image in photoshop then importing that? Try to use TGA they're pretty good in UDK, and maybe try exporting the texture as an RGB, then save a separate file as the alpha mask if you know what I mean. It doesn't have to be the same image to be used as an alpha. Give that a go..
