Adjusting the volume of sounds or music

After watching a number of video tutorials on sounds I'm still unable to adjust the volume of a particular sound. When I look at the properties in the sound editor The properties for the volume are all blue and they are locked out. Anyone got some experience at this and have a reletively easy fix for a nubie

You can adjust the volume in the sound cues or in the sound actor's properties when it's in the level.
