    Heightmaps help

    Hi there.

I'm currently making some heightmaps in Terragen in order to import them into the UDK to use as terrain. However, despite how smooth it comes out in the Terragen internal render, it always looks like spikes when actually imported into the UDK! Hell, it even looks like that in the preview window of HMCS. I've set everything correctly according to the UDN page, yet it still looks the same.

    Any ideas?

Try increasing the tessellation on the terrain.

April 2011. It's a problem I've had in the April and May 2010 builds too.

Having run into this when I was playing with Terrain, I've got your back.

You need to scale the 3D.ScaleZ waaaaaay way down. You can find out the exact number you need by doing some math on your Terrain dimensions (vertical range / 2^16), but you can probably play with it to get it to look OK.
