Dimensions and software for level layout

    Hello all,

I have recently begun laying out my levels by drawing them in MS Visio first. While the tool isn't exact, it does give me a good idea of where items will be located throughout my level. In particular, I am trying to create a few levels which will be either an apartment or a home.

I save the design as a .psd which transfer into UDK and use it as a material on a plane, however I am not sure of how to get the correct measurements. For example, I understand that the standard UDK character is approx 96 x 32 x 32 unreal units.

My issue is, how do I create a top-down drawing of my level without stretching it? I would like for it to be a normal size for an apartment when I draw it into UDK, without stretching it to the point that it is unrecognizable. How should I go about doing this?

Also, how do most of you generally lay out your levels?
